I’m from Parson X originally and they are not untypical of the locals (not like me naturally……).
Sad to see it go but not been in for years so I am partly to blame.

Englanders "There's to many forinz moving here and taking jobs and benefits from the UKs best and brightest"

Also Englanders "Let's interview these two locals"

We would always call in the Gate and Travellers as we'd park nearby.

I remember the last people to own the Gate just literally did what they wanted. I ordered a pint and they got a warm can out of a multi-box, which had obviously just been purchased from a shop, and they had the cheek to try charging me the usual price.

Travs was a good one. I was in there after we got relegated against Palace and it was like we'd won promotion! "Relegation conga, Championship no longer!"

The almond milk, soya, and sparkling mineral water brigade killed pubs.

Too many breweries spent too much money on changing things to accommodate them. Then had to close down traditional pubs to pay for the changes introduced that did not bring in extra revenue as they just wanted to hang about for 6 hours clutching the same drink for hours on end.

Pubs were about a pint going down the neck every 30 mins.

Exactly. Sorry but the only cause is that  blokes stopped frequenting crap pubs midweek

Groups of blokes over 25 drinking to get drunk on weekdays hasn't been a thing since the 90's for two reasons.

Firstly most people would agree these days that it's a crap way to spend a night out.

Second a lot of the customers with the habit who don't agree have gradually died off or cant do it anymore.

It’s also bloody expensive. We pay London prices everywhere now. You do well to get 4 pints for £20.

I also think there’s been a generational shift in health and wellbeing. Most people who are aged between 17-40 now would prefer to play 5 a side or go to the gym etc.

I think a lot of those of us who don't live in Hillsborough get a false impression of the pubs near the ground because we only see them on match days when they're packed.

Through the week, especially in winter, they probably struggle like any other local.

Correct and somehow this has got to be what it goes back to, otherwise they will cease to exist in a few years.

More and more people struggling financially and pubs are charging 5 pound a pint. Its Sheffield not London it’s 2 quid too much.

More and more youth don’t drink. Don’t socialise. It’s so sad to see

It's supermarkets. Beer duty. Changing attitudes towards drink driving. Huge macro breweries snapping up pubs and charging unrealistic rent. Health awareness. Rising costs for breweries.

Also, one of the biggest detriments to pubs, is that along with what has been said, the breweries putting rents and everything else up and up, people who knew what they were doing didn't want to do it anymore because they were being tsunami fora ride.

So when they left the breweries filled the position with any dipsticks, who thought it was easy living for a lot of money.

The Forty Foot was one of them.

What a boozer it used to be ☹️

Totally agree. We moved to Derbyshire in 1990 when there were 23 pubs within a mile radius or so. Many were closing before Covid and by the time that Covid had (relatively) gone, there were about five left although three have (re-)opened along with two micro pubs last year.

The calibre of management that the breweries put in often leaves something to be desired and where the management was good, the breweries simply raised their rent. The landlord of one decent pub was buying his beer from the brewery at more than what the neighboring pub was selling it!
