Some unbelievable times and characters. Banning alcohol on coaches put paid to a lot of the fun though. I must know you then

There are record sleeves all over the wall from the 60's and 70's, maybe even 50's - Slim Whitman, Nana Miskouri, Jim Reeves, James Last. God knows what away fans think when they go in, probably that it's a wierd theme pub or if not, an example of how far behind the times northerners are. The bar staff are great but the ale isnt amazing. I don't think it's changed hands though. It hasn't changed hands but the quality of the ale is still poor. Down to laziness and not cleaning pipes etc.

oldtawnyowl
Back in the day there used to be a character called "Wally" in the Crookes area who used to sell the "spot the ball" tickets in his local pubs. When the ticket was full he would nip to the toilet where he would open the ticket to find the winning number, then he would go into the "tap room" and announce the "winning" number knowing that this number had been sold to a customer sitting in the lounge. Then into the lounge and announce the "winning" number which he knew was sold in the "tap" room. He got away with this scam for months before he was rumbled. He was eventually caught out when two mates were chatting:- "I see you won the spot the ball again" "No I didn't" "But you always have number 7" "Number 7 didn't win it, number 12 won it" "Well Wally just announced number 7 in't tap room.......... And so he was found out! I don't recall any fisticuffs but needless to say he was never allowed to sell any tickets again. 2
