Official :6 English teams agree to Super League

Recommended Posts

I think the majority of football fans will be in the 'couldn't give a flying fizz' brigade.

It's got short term disaster written all over it and why anyone is shocked about it being for the money when the clubs are owned and run by venture capitalists is beyond me.

Sod 'em. Just make sure if they come back bleating there are sufficient and serious enough penalties in place to make the twohats suffer.

Bye bye bye bye ...bye bye bye bye ...

Not sure tbh. If the clubs win then that renders all of the governing bodies effectively powerless and defunct and it's merely a matter of time before the next money driven challenge comes along.

If the governing bodies want to retain any form of control then they have to act immediately and decisively. For them it's a matter of survival.

Maybe but who are the money guys here?

Money will win.

Excellent post fella.
Don’t forget cricket went down this road with Kerry Packer in the 70’s. If the football authorities stay as strong as the cricket ones did by rejecting the clubs from their domestic leagues and banning their players from international football it will soon expose this for the greedy circus it actually is.
It won’t stop the money in the short term but it will eventually become a retirement home like the MLS.
F@@k em, yes for the first couple of seasons the Premiership will be worse off but the working class ethos and history of football is far bigger than anything these will ever build.  UTO

You make an excellent point about the players.

With no fear of failure, places in EFL squads could well become filled with old has-beens rather than filled with ambitious players determined to prove a point. Suddenly, do we get an ever decreasing shop window for young emerging talent?

The EFL itself could well become its own retirement home!

Do I understand it correctly then that these splitters do not intend to participate in the Champions or Europa Leagues next season (should they finish in a place that qualifies),  and that the Super League is their proposed replacement for the Champions League?

Yes, in effect destroying the Champions League.

Not sure if this idea as been muted earlier, but here goes anyway. Obviously this new league is all about more money for the big clubs. So , where does all this money come from indirectly ? Yes, the fans !!  by paying more for the privelege to watch the new E.S.L. games on TV through all the different outlets, advertising at the grounds, which we also pay for indirectly through dearer products, advertising during games etc. ALL revenue needed to pay these BIG clubs will come from US THE TRUE FANS OF FOOTBALL. Well i tell you what, why don,t we all just boycott all these clubs right now. Don,t buy any merchandise involving these clubs. Cancel all your subscriptions to Sky TV etc. Do anything to stop these money grabbing parasites from destroying OUR Football structure, ie 4 divisions with promotion and relegation, because the lack of funds filtering down from the Big clubs will surely mean the end of football as we know it now.

You are fooling yourself.

If someone said to you that you could take back football for the fans and all it would cost was the existence in the football pyramid of six clubs that you don't support, and the ability to maybe one day watch some 'big stars' that you wouldn't recognise if they walked past you in the street anyway, you would bite their hand off.

It's poo for the fans of those clubs.  Help should definitely be offered if they want to set up new phoenix clubs.

Now if only the football authorities in weren't so bloody timid.

Money will win.

No, the rules (effectively a contract) will win and it will all hinge on how the courts (if it goes that far) interprets the contract.

I don't have anything constructive to say, except: f*** Man U, f*** City, f*** Liverpool, f*** Atletico, f*** Madrid,  f*** Milan, f*** Inter, and especially f*** Arsenal and Spurs.

Addendum: massive spiky pineapples up the bum for the Glazers. May their gilded halls fall in on their heads and give them a ruddy headache.

Are you regularly buying Liverpool and Man City merchandise?

The 'fans of the future' that they want are big corporates, tourists and TV viewers in China and the Middle East.  They couldn't give a flying fizz if actual fans don't give them a penny.

The comparison to the cricket is one I thought of too. Think the difference between what's happened there and this ESL is that football's appeal is globally much broader and the Chinese and Indian markets (maybe USA too) represent the big revenue opportunity

What happened to the other thread in the General Section?

The Champions League is completely dead.

I think the clubs will get a revamped Champions League with better TV and merchandise rights / money and the Super league will die a death.

Really admire the sentiment of this - but the problem is as long as fans in North America and Asia pay TV subscriptions there'll be enough money to sustain this league.

Even if fans managed to arrange total boycotts of attending say Liverpool's Super League home games, the first thing they'd do is move the games to Boston, Hong Kong, wherever they get a sell-out crowd.

I would think that Morgan Stanley's legal team have been all over the contractual issues long before this was announced.

They must feel they have a good chance of winning.
