I'm pretty sure place names aren't copywrited

So for eg you wouldn't need permission to use the name Sheffield for your new business - for eg Sheffield Plumbing

And i'm also pretty sure that team names are copywrited - so the legal wrangles to try to force them to change names would be finiancially catastrophic for any council/authority to consider

Great Point there. In the longer term, Is there a possibilty that the owners will eventually relocate the clubs to other parts of the World ie China and the Far East?

Of course it is not the first money grab or opportunity to seek financial gain.

It is a watershed moment though - creating a European Super League that is a closed shop in terms of its elite members never being relegated and the rest being invite-only.

It would move them from being dominant domestically to being more or less untouchable. Leicester winning the league and Arsenal, Man Utd and Milan falling down the league pecking order has pushed this forward, as has the huge debts of the Spanish clubs.

But still absolutely inevitable with the obscene about of money chucked about by these top clubs.

Of course they will. It will be up to the highest bidder.

As opposed to never winning it because of them.

Anyone who wins the Premier League without them in it wouldn’t be held in as high regard because it would no longer mean that you’re the best team in the country. Maybe even only 7th best

TBH much of the outcry and protestation is very simlar to when the PL was being developed

It is but football in this country at that time wasn't in a great place. Thatcher had made it a bit of an aspect of society to be looked down upon and the European ban didn't help. We were coming out of that at the time of the PL formation but the format was ripe for a revamp. It was clearly geared towards the benefit of the big 6 at the time but at least it kept the traditions of promotion and relegation and reward for winning the league with some money trickling down. Compared to the likes of La Liga and Serie A where the big clubs have long monopolised TV money, it was a way forward.

This seems like even more of a power grab to address the fact that the big 6 are being challenged by others so they want to put a stop to all that.

Would seem like a logical end point - cities bid for the "right" tohave the franchise established in their city

Wouldn't surprise me

Absolutely. It will be no different to that of the Major Companies that has shipped out most of it's manufacturing capacity from the West to the Far East.

Never realised that Barcelona are in over €1 Billion of debt. That is frightening. Their New Debt (the amount of assets they have minus how much money they owe) is €488 Million.

Before Covid, the 12 clubs lost £1.2 Billion a year. No wonder they are looking for more revenue. Players wages seriously need to be looked at.

It’s a rigged competition and has been for many years, gets worse all the time.

Yes and no.. but as I posted earlier in this thread, pre premier league days the big 6 plus Leeds and Everton (who were big 6 type clubs at the time) won 24 out of 28 between 1964-92. That’s not hugely different to the 26 out of 28 since the PL was formed. You have to go back to the 1950s and earlier to find a time where anyone could win it on a regular basis really

Thin end of the wedge this.

The next thing will be the ESL offer to run top leagues in domestic football. Completely overriding the FA, UEFA etc.

That's how the Premier League started and we accept that. (a lot didn't at the time)
