Are we THAT team

Recommended Posts

We've drawn too many I reckon. Just 2 of those draws turned into wins and we're in the playoffs now. Absolutely crazy when you think about it. If results go our way tonight, and I doubt they will cos there's far too many that hurt us either way, and we win Saturday I'll reassess the situation. Then I'll want to wait til the next round of games to have another look. I'm not going to start believing yet, I did that before the reading game and thoroughly jinxed it for the next 3. I gave up on believing after the Rotherham game. You can see the pattern.

Phew! Brilliant stuff - and sounds like the story of our lives being Wednesday supporters, especially the stuff about sacrifice, hardship, death and rebirth!!  All I meant though was that the calendar repeats itself exactly every 28 yrs, and that this has happened (or multiples of it) whenever we've won a Cup Competition, 1907, 1935, then 2 x 28 to 1991, followed by perlease... 2019, for the Play-off Cup, or we've blown another 28 yrs!

Thats what i was thinking as i read about the supposed influence of saturn - we definitely go through the mill as Wednesday fans, don't we.

I realised you were on about the successful periods in our history, at 28 tp 30 year intervals too. It struck me; our very first fa cup win was 29 years after our establishment in 1867 followed by a pretty successful decade culminating in the 1907 cup success. 20 years later we embark on another decade of success (back to back league titles at the end of the 1920s), then lo and behold the 35 cup win 28 years after our last one! Fast forward to the mid sixties (30 years) and in 66 we'd not won a major trophy but we were damn close, and since the late fifties had been the yo-yo team, as well as our runners up spot in div 1 to spurs which would have seen us champions in any other season based on points total. In 62/63/64 we finished 6th in div one each season. And in 63 we had the craziest run of matches in march, april and may (no less than 20 matches in 2 and a half months). 28 years later and the 91 cup win was at the tail end of a decade of a relatively successful period back in the big time. Now? 28/30 years later could just be the beginning of another decade of relative success in the higher echelons hopefully! I guess my point being we get the suffering and reemergence either side of every 28 to 30 year period since 1867!

They've only got 4 games before then. It's impossible for them to secure promotion before they play us even if they win all 4 and Norwich and pigs lose all 4.

It's highly unlikely but there's a tiny chance that Norwich could be already promoted when we play them but I think they'd have to win their next 6 and pigs lose every game before then.

I must have misread the remaining fixtures that someone put up on here, it showed Leeds being the second to last game of the season. Thanks for that' bud.

Actually you're looking for historical cycles, something significant seems to happen to us when the year ends in zero. Since winning the title in 1930, we've been either promoted or relegated every time other than when there was no league in 1940 and we got promoted "early" in 1959 rather than 60.

Unfortunately 4 of the last 5 times have been relegations, but perhaps we're due a promotion in 2020...

Personally i think the playoffs is out of reach.

But, the thing that really concerns me is our part in helping United gain automatic promotion. With Leeds and Norwich to play, neither will be looking forward to playing us in the form we are in under Bruce.

Great comprehensive list is that.  My Gt Grandad Tommy played for the Owls in 2-6 in your list.  I forgot about the 2nd Div. Championship 1899-1900; a real achievement that, in their 1st season at Hillsborough to go straight back up after being relegated in their last season at Olive Grove.  We need that spirit now in the side and I've got a feeling the lads are are starting to wake up to the idea that it's possible.

Neon Nick seems to have twigged this, but has anyone else?  Wednesday won the FA Cup in 1907 and 1935 and the League Cup in 1991.  The gaps between these years is a multiple of 28.  If you add 28 years on to 1991, it brings us to 2019.  Just a coincidence probably, I know, but the intriguing thing is this... the calendar repeats itself exactly every 28 years.

The first of the above dates means a lot to us in our family because my Gt Grandad Tommy led Wednesday to beat Everton in the 1907 Cup Final and when he did so on the 3rd Saturday in April of that year, at Crystal Palace, it turned out to be the 20th April as it is this year, as it was in 1935 and again in 1991.

It's probably just a load of old statistical cobblers', not to say depressing, to think that we only win stuff every 28 years, or multiples of 28 yrs, but I thought I'd raise it here as a matter of interest.  Will we win the play-off Cup this year to add to the other Cups we've won when the calendar exactly repeated itself?  We've got a mountain to climb just to be in it, let alone win it, but lets hope we can put a run together to nick it.

Are you taking about Tom Crawshaw?

Yes that's my name too. There were four generations of us Tom Crawshaws alive at one time in our family: Tommy the footballer, his son, my Grandad, his son in turn - my Dad, and me.  I was 9 yrs old when Tommy died in 1960.  By coincidence my Mom, Dad and me ended up living on the same Council Estate as my Gt. Grandad towards the end of his life, on Lowedges, after he retired from being landlord of The Yorkshireman in town.

We used to joke that we were all called Tom due to a distinct lack of imagination when naming sons in our family- as in... 'what is it - a boy?'  'Yes, I'm thinking of calling him Tom after his Dad, what do you think?' - 'Yep that'll do, get on with it.'.  Of course the  truth is we were all so proud of Tommy, that his name was bound to thought of when sons came along.

I don't know if you were at 'The Olive Grove Years' evening, at Hillsborough November 2017, as part of the 150th anniversary, but I gave a talk about Tommy at that event, which was really well attended. I was amazed at how many people knew so much about him.   A lot of people were moved by the last slide I showed of him aged 76, at Hillsborough, in 1949, at the 50th anniversary of Wednesday moving to the ground from Olive Grove..  I said that he had two things in his possession that day that he was very proud of, his two FACup  winnders medalss on his watch chain, and also two things he wouldn't wish on anybody his pair of crutches - a legacy of his commitment to Wednesday, playing on in game after game whilst injured.  That's commitment for you and why so many people wanted to shaaake my hand afterwards        .

Sorry for my dodgy keyboard which sometimes doubles and triples up on some characters.  I didn't mean 'shake' to come out as 'shaaake' in my prev post.  I found the picture of Tommy at the 50th Hillsborough anniversary game in 1949 mentioned in my post which I've attached.  You can see his two FA Cup winners medals on his watch chain and his obvious reliance on crutches through latent effect of injuries as a player.  He used to say that he 'tormented' his forwards by telling them to have more cracks at goal. He'd be saying that now if still alive and telling them to get stuck in and reach them playoffs!

Last 10 games of last three seasons reads

2015/16 - 18 Points

2016/17 - 19 Points

2017/18 - 20 Points

This suggests that this squad of players are more than capable of finishing this season strongly and with a proven experienced Manager at the helm perhaps we can finish even stronger?
