Sean Clare future in doubt

He's better than any other youngsters we've brought through in that sort of position in the past 20 years.

That's not saying much, admittedly, but it's true nontheless. He's the best and brightest prospect we currently have for a home-grown midfielder.

I wanna see Penney get a shot next, regardless of how this plays out.

edit: Also, Clare's a fool to himself if he goes, I honestly believe that - not just sour grapes. Hirst I might reluctantly admit to seeing other, potentially better options for, given his somewhat unique circumstances; Clare I genuinely wouldn't.

No players bigger than Sheffield Wednesday including Hirst get rid

Clare would have been happy to return to Gillingham in January. A couple of decent matches later, along with a couple of indifferent ones, and now he's thinking he'll do better elsewhere. I wanted to keep him initially but becoming increasingly less bothered about doing so if we can get a half decent fee for him.

Agree that there are no players bigger than the club. Don't agree 'get rid' unless he categorically comes out and says he doesn't want to be here. But we'll see!

I don’t know their reasons, but when you’ve got 6 or 7 strikers ahead of you, maybe you think the path is blocked We have a large squad, full of thirty somethings on big money, most of whom are going nowhere, you might think your prospects are bleak

You wouldn’t have this season particularly the last few months. There was an opportunity to resolve that, if that was the only reason (it wasn’t)

Clare has even been playing and won’t sign

Showed some promise.  Plenty to learn.

You'd think young players would jump at the chance of signing on with a big championship club with the chance to play and improve.

I always wonder how much input plauers actually have into what they do, where they go. Etc etc.

Well done Sheffield Wednesday in not being held to ransom by young players or any players, if they don't want to be here get them f**ked off....

I only want to hear and read about players who WANT to be here and play for that badge and feel "honoured and proud" by doing so..

Not jumped up young mercenaries, no ta

I don't think many players do that nowadays, it's all about money and how muh they can get, which is human nature I suppose.

Get rid for me. Club can’t be held to ransom over someone who’s played maybe 5 games.

He definitely not as good as he thinks he is.

This.  Borderline offensive he thinks he deserves a move out.

Clare is being badly advised.  I don't understand where he thinks he has any leverage here.  Oh well.  Not concerned in the least.  Door, arse.

Instead of slagging the club for not getting these 2 tied down why not look at all the young talent that have signed contracts recently....players who have been successfull at u18 and u23 level as well as get first team experiance...players who WANT to be at Sheffield Wednesday!!!! Let them move on...good luck to them.

Exactly - both teams doing tremendously well this season - the only shining light in a dog's dinner of a season.

What better , paying a little more in wages to make sure we keep hold of our best young prospects . or wasting £30k a week on old, injury prone crocks. ?

we have the £30kpw 'injury prone crocks' under contract though, we can all see we shouldn't add any more, and likely we can't afford to, but i doubt very few who are not out of contract will be leaving.

let's hope with a full pre season under their belt they're all back to their best.

however at the onset of this premier league push under dc, we bought players in at the top of their careers in some cases, i can think of the odd one that might have been past their best when signed.

i personally was disappointed that we spent so much so widely at the time, as i would have preferred to add in positions where gray's side was lacking (attacking options) and see waht we had from there, but it was not to be that way.

can't stand the weasel agent input

but whilst these potential departures are seen as some sort of disloyalty and treason

it's their job so most young lads whatever their job when offered double triple wages will follow the cash

Very true. What's best for a young player in the short term isn't always what's best for them in the long term, though. Establishing yourself at a Championship club and earning a big money move a few years down the line could pay greater dividends than jumping to a Premier League club's development squad now.

Having said that, it's a very brave decision to turn down the money when it's offered and back yourself to play your way to a better deal in the future, especially when an injury or change of manager can see your budding career derailed in an instant.

I was reading an interview with a well established player (can't remember) who was talking about being asked for advice from a younger player about moving from a lower league club to the Premiership.  He wasn't being promised games, but would be on 10 times more money than he was on.  His advice to him was: never chase the money.  If you're good enough, the money will come to you.
