Sheffield’s Struggle

Recommended Posts

Both teams deserve to be relegated. Don't pay much attention to the blunts or the EPL, but from our point of view relegation is completely and utterly self inflicted.

Continued incompetence by the owner and cowardice by the players. No excuse, we've been poo all season.

We could have had a reyt laugh this season just by staying up after the points deduction.

It’s not like we haven’t had the opportunities but we’ve failed time after time after time in big moments purely and simply because of lack of bottle and leadership.

You can rant all you want about the chairman and the state of the club, various managers etc but what happens on the pitch is really what counts and this spineless bunch should hang their heads in shame.

We had a list of the mad stuff that the chairman has done.  You could easily make a similar list of stupid and pathetic stuff this team have done, out there, on the pitch over this season.

Failure to fight back in any game even to achieve a draw, losing from winning positions, stupid sending offs, missed chances, crumbling late on in games, the list is endless.

This club lacks leadership on and off the pitch and looks to have denied us, and this city, what could have been a good season of fierce rivalry in the same division next season.

Pathetic.

Absolutely spot on..its not that difficult to keep in this league. As you mention forget about DC and Monk, Jos etc etc.  This sits with the players no one else, they may not be the best in the league; however they are no way near the worst.

Bad decisions and lack of effort by the players has got us relegated. The games against, Rotherham, Wycombe,  QPR, Stoke were horrendous, players not interested.

Yes they have had disruption, managers  pay etc. The games should have been a chance to put all the crap behind them, but no they don't care.

that's a ridiculous post. It's not the fans fault we're in this position. Of course if it was a one club city there would be more chance of being successful but that's not what it's about.

What’s it about then? I’ve seen a post about Manchester and Liverpool being similar sized cities. Well if you pool together the average attendances of both then you’re looking at the best part of 80-130k average attendance. You pool the both the average attendances of the 2 clubs in Sheffield you’ll get 50-60k if you’re lucky.

I’m aware that Manchester United/City and Liverpool/Everton attract fans from around the world but so could Wednesday and United but neither don’t have the footballing history or the marketing tools to attract fans from further afield.

All this Sheffield gave birth to the game cr@p yet we’ve never ever had a club that has carried the gravitas of Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham or Arsenal in the game. Think what you want but you won’t change my opinion, very much in the same way I won’t change yours?

On and by the way your post was a ridiculous one as well 😛

It’s sad for Sheffield that it is home to 1 bang average football club and one basket case of a club. I remember the excitement it bought to the city (and sadly the chaos) when there was a Sheffield derby in the top tier.

You must have a good memory. When was that.

Sheffield’s not big enough or passionate enough a football city to carry two clubs. It’s been blatantly obvious for years. If the city had one club like Leeds, Leicester or Newcastle it would’ve been far more successful.

Remind me of Newcastle’s success

Spot on...we all know the chairman's a nonesense, but make no mistake this relegation is down to a barely professional bunch of shiite we have, they won't be ashamed though because that would suggest they care, which if true would also mean they had put effort in this season and they haven't

Not 100% sure but isn't Liverpool a similar sized city? Manchester isn't much bigger but they seem to be doing ok

It’s unfair to compare Manchester with Sheffield.

Man Uniteds fan based is purely down to a unique set of circumstances and City’s is down to the money they spent prior to the drawbridge coming up. You only need to look at their recent Champions league attendances to see how passionate their fans are

That’s testicles. Everyone knows Sheffielders love their football. Each club is capable of getting over 30,000 in the Prem. Norwich City have just been promoted to the PL for the sixth time. The difference is they have good owners and we have poo ones who let the fans down time and time again.

Chansiri is responsible for our plight off the pitch, but what these players have done on it has been a disgrace to themselves and the club. It’s nothing to do with ability. These lads have crumbled, repeatedly.

After many decades of bigger crowds..twice as big an average in respect of both clubs compared to the clubs in those cities...those clubs across the Pennines have had much higher income, always been able to bank profits, buy the top players.
Then they became  attractive to investors in the changes of ownership/ foreign investment era and for over 20 years have devoured the income from TV and the Premier League.
They then attract the best managers, a key point.

Yeah not really sure about this,  Wednesday have a larger fan base than many of the current prem sides. Or at least an equal fan base but the better you are the higher your attendance tends to be.  If you look at the Saints attendances when they dropped to league 1 it was around 23-24k a game, then about 26k in the championship when they were top 2 and now 32k in the prem.  Wednesday can easily match that if you put a decent side on the pitch for people to watch

For 60 years, Wednesday have struggled to get 30, 000  for a run of the mill league match, and certainly not averaged it.

It's about supporting a club not a city. You can go on forever like that. Imagine how massive London FC would be, would you need a 500k seater stadium?

Wednesday and United attract plenty of fans, especially as we are in a very dense footballing area with Rotherham, Barnsley and Rovers all in our catchment area

If you look at Leeds catchment area it's absolutely huge compared to us with the likes of Harrogate, Wakefield, Pontefract, etc etc not having teams yet Leeds only average a few more thousand than us, and have won less than us. So Leeds are a massive failure?

The fact that Sheffield has two teams that have been top flight says there is a huge footballing appetite in the city. The footballing appetite in the region is so great every town has their own club. It's a hot bed here, that dilutes our success on the pitch but if you want plastic franchises with no character than you might be better off following American sports.

It's just crap all round tbh.

Owner is rubbish and the players are complete and utter morons.

Couldn't even beat a mid-table, down to ten men Bristol City at home.

Shocking.

The city can't accommodate 2 successive clubs - there's not enough demand in both fan-base and serious owners with enough money. Both clubs seem to attract dubious individuals who's motivation is probably short-term returns, not long-term growth. TBH out of the two clubs, only McCabe showed any sensible strategy in investment off the field, but this was motivated by his property business returns. His poor attention to on-field investment lead them into L1 for 5 years, having sacked Warnock, which was an horrendous decision - look at Norwich to see how things should be done.

Whilst the club you support is pretty determined by your family (I appreciate there are exceptions) the support is pretty evenly spilt in the 10 mile radius catchment. We are not a Man U, Liverpool or London club who pulls in thousands outside the city limits.

We could be a fairly stable, successful club, perhaps yo-yoing in and out of the PL if we have the right infrastructure in place. We are miles away from that at the moment.

I've been thinking the same. The last two-three seasons have been very much something else than fun, and the next season in Championship would definitely be our last as we have to replace almost a full squad during the summer. I can see a relegation the only wake up call we have left in the toolbox. And that it hopefully prevents Paxo from stuffing overpaid past-it players to the club anymore.

Would love to be able to share your optimism about the last sentence. Nothing I've seen hints at that being the case, it'll just be more of the same. Why would being in a lower division change anything?
