Im starting to understand how this advertising thing works now. Mention Alex Ferguson in one post and now he's on every page I look at!!!

Mind, I know one thing for sure without even having to click on the ad...Ferguson certainly didn't make his money by lumping on Rowett!!

I've had some great debates on here.  Some friendly , some at times a bit  lively, sometimes getting very snarky, but never any abuse that I can remember.  I've still got a couple of the old sparring partners. Some I think enjoy and deliberately  give me a little playful jab with the needle to get me going sometimes!!  But all in good spirit. I think! From my end anyway!

I've hardly dished out any negs in all my time on here. I'd always rather debate the point, even with folks who wont budge ay all! :laugh:The few I have, have been when people have gone beyond the pale, wishing death on folks, that sort of thing.

The ones I never understand are the zero post neggers. Who never have their say.  Come on in and join the debate. It's always interesting to see what and why people don't agree.

It's good you take it that way, but then I guess that is probably close to being the real "offline" you in some respects. But again for me it raises another question that is what has created, and continues to fuel, the aggression we read about online by others? Or is it that it gets the greater attention over kinder acts and deeds?

I'm much like you - just without a "Stubbs", and the house etc - in that I don't often neg. Bizarrely, I tend to back away before I start, on most of things I want to comment on on here, purely because I'm online. If someone wants to make a comment and make a fool of themselves, step right up. I otfen find myself looking through a thread at two posters only, having a right go at each other and laughing to myself. Face-to-face, I'll debate until I am blue in the face (doesn't take much being a Smurf) or until everyone admits I am right. Which I am. Always. Unless I'm not.

I've not come across zero post neggers before, so maybe I've been lucky. I don't tend to get many of my posts neg'd even when I am being my stupid sarcastic dry self. I guess most people take my comments" the right way, which is good. The thing that get's me though is people who come on and just argue, with nothing to back them up:

"W'eh, he's sh!t. Shouldn't wear the shirt again."

"Why?"

"Because he's rubbish."

Tha what? He's sh!t because he's rubbish! I'm paraphrasing but you get the gist. At least some people take some time to back up their arguement, rather than type the first thing that hits their middle finger.

I guess it depends what else would be introduced off of the "football technology" you talk about . Would we have phones like we do now, tablets, laptops, the giant social media platforms which we can gorge on over our 512Mb broadband connections? If we had, then I doubt it would be any different, even if other technologies hadn't quote caught up.

But it's not the technology that's to blame; it's a change in human psychology brought on by the anonymity of the screen. It's something people hide behind, re-invent themselves through, and it's that, in my opinion, which has changed our attitudes towards the game and many other aspects of life. And I salute it, because it gives everyone a voice, and as we all know, it doesn't take long for people to know who they should, and shouldn't listen to.

I SAID, it doesn't take lon.....oh FFS!

In addition, I'd suggest that the rise of free and instant social media (as long as other things like voting on the outcome of TV shows, rolling news programmes, on demand television, online shopping and food deliveries etc) have made us much more spoiled, impatient and demanding. Generally, this may have rather more negative side effects.

Yes mate. I’ve spent the evening with my best pal in the pub, I’m now chilling at home with a whisky listening to some great music.  I shouldn’t be on here replying to this I should be enjoying the moment. Wednesday shouldn’t be at the forefront of my mind until Saturday morning. But they always are.

I think some people are probably just angry full stop in life. I have the odd rage myself in real life. Usually over daft things like parking. Or seeing another shop sign go up with the word "ARTISAN" on. (Shudder).

I tend not to get mad online. Mainly because I'm so slow at typing any anger I might have had has usually waned by the time I'm ready to hit send!

On a slow news day they are quite fun while you enjoy a quiet brew.

I've actually sprayed tea with some of the laughs people give us sometimes!

In fact, generally I think there is some superb humour on this site.

I've had a couple! Bolly- something or other. And bananadog , something like that.

Just think it's a shame if they disagree with something that they don't want to have their say. Unless they are just bots or something.

Mind. There was once a Blunt on here for a while who negged every single post anyone put!! I think Hargreaves got him in the end though.

Heheh.

These are the hardest to debate. But I still have a bash before reaching for the red button!!

I've never blocked a single person either.  Though a few might have blocked me!

There's one or two posters I just skip past, I see their name and I just can't be bothered to listen to their whinging, it's as though they've got an agenda, with one or two I wonder if they are Wednesdayites at all

Similarly, there's quite a few posters, I see their username and I read every word

I don't understand the people who neg and run, I never see some of them post, but they neg regularly, enter the debate guys, I have three or four who neg me a fair bit, I'm pretty sure one does it for a reaction, probably to see if I neg them, but I rarely neg people

I have one who negs me whenever I use the word Fanny, which is a lot in the Dressing Room, I mean, who doesn't like Fanny

And before I forget, Fuuck off Bolly

Pay on the day with pound notes. In them days, an 'all ticket match' meant it was a special game. Big fixture on the calendar & then turn up to see all the TV lorries there. We're gonna be on MOTD! Might even be the main match.

Young boys, in the park, isn't it, wasn't it? Marvellous.

Rolling off the train special & being herded around. Feeling a bit notorius with a police escort. Crap really but entertaining.

Owlstalk would've been in meltdown in the summer of 84 when Wilkinson replaced Big Jack a fecking ex PE teacher, pity there aren't any Ex PE teachers around today we could hire and make a big success of it

Nearly right, summer of 83 actually!

Also there were plenty of us having a meltdown even then!

Mind you it stopped about 5 or 6 games in!

(Or has technology made us a bit weirder/mardier/ )

I sometimes wish football was simpler like it used to be.  Not just the rules, and the offside law actually being easy to understand, but all the other stuff. Being able to just turn up. Just watching the game and either enjoying it or getting the face on and then forgetting it. Rather than it being a 24 hour thing.
But my mind wanders…..what would have been like if the modern technology of the game had existed then? Would we have handled it better? Were we more easy going?  If there were multiple cameras at every ground rather than the rarity it was when you saw the big waggon parked up “Tellies here today!” If the internet and twitter and Facebook had existed ,and the computer games and the wall to wall TV analysis that make tactical experts of everybody.

image.png.f24700661ee7373b6a39b3a302df3318.png

I don't know.

I just think I think about football too much these days. Do we all?  It doesn't make me cry like it used to. But on the other hand I cried and that was that. Now...I might not cry. But it's 24/7

Would we have coped with the technology back then. Would we have embraced it. Would we have been less knee-jerk. (I don't just mean us, I mean all fans)

I don't know.

would we have been more chilled. Just had a beer and mumped and then got on with it. Or would it have been the same as now.

Has the online 24/7 online world replaced the chat down the pub. Or is it more than that. Has it made us different to what we used to be.

Wednesday in need of a manager for example how would that have played out?

I don't remember ever having massive debates about possible managers in the past? Would it have been like it is now? There were some you liked and wanted. But we didn't have the info at our fingertips of every manager in the world then.

What would it have been like on here...

 Clough

  •     “Not for me, he’s nearly took Brighton to the 4th division!”
  •     “He was brilliant at Derby. Just the type we need.”
  •     “Aye till he resigned coz he didn’t get his own way. He’s never off the telly anyroad, he’s more bothered about himsen. He’s too arrogant.”
  •     “I think we should go for him. He’s a Big character it’s just what we need”
  •     “No, no. If he isn’t good enough for L**ds he isn’t good enough for us”

Clough gets appointed and wins a couple and loses a couple

  •    “He’s nowt wi’out Taylor. He were the brains behind the outfit I’m telling you. Cloughs never at training ground in the week!”
  •    “It’s all right playing nicey nicey football but it’s a results business.”
  •    “Can’t we give him a chance!”
  •    “He keeps picking that Robertson, he’s too slow”
  •    “Got a great cross on him though”
  •    “He’s only good with money to spend. A million pounds. F*cking lunacy!”

Ferguson

  •    “Young up and coming manager. Someone who might build something to last. It’s time we took a gamble instead of the same old names”
  •    “He manages in Scotland! It’s the equivalent of the Redgates League. Larry Grayson could win a cup up there”
  •    “His teams try and attack”
  •    “He got sacked from East Stirling!”
  •    “It wasn’t because of the football though”
  •    “No he was trying to fix bonuses for the players. I don’t want someone like that at my club”
  •    “We need someone with experience of the English Leagues!”
  •    “l like the way his St Mirren team plays with attacking wingers.”
  •    “Aye, so did Partick Thistle when they battered ‘em 6-0. He’s tactically naïve!”
  •    “Don’t want him learning his trade here. We need the finished article”

Ferguson comes. Wins a couple loses a couple.

image.png.cadcf81f91dbf0e7dd752ba8d24976da.png

  • "He just sat there in the dugout chewing gum, he didn't know what to do! "
  •    “I don’t know why he’s signed that Hughes, he’s all arse and elbows. We need a pacy young striker who can bag us 30 goals.”
  •    “He’s bringing the kids through though. We need to back him”
  •    “It’s been 8 draws and a defeat! If we don’t win that FA Cup game against Forest with a fortuitous Mark Robbins goal on Saturday he’s got to go. He’s not experienced enough. “
  •    “I don’t know why he’s signed that Irwin and then put him at left back. He’s all right foot. Played right back for Oldham. He’s shoehorning players all over the shop. He just picks his favourites.”
  •    “I’ve heard he’s took bitter AND lager off the menu at the training ground. No wonder the players don’t like him. You can’t do stuff like that.”
  •    "If Lee Martin is the answer we're asking the wrong question!"
  •    “Aye. Somebody told me he’s stopped Tony Galvin going for a half time pint an’all”

==============

Y’know. I can’t wait for Saturday, I feel a bit restless.  I might need a snooze.

Every detail is over analyzed now... I’m not that old(wrong side of 40) but I’m sure you‘d wait for green‘un,read over that even though you‘d only been back from match an hour , then Sunday paper maybe then get over it ready for Saturday.

with Football heaven and Forums every little detail of games are picked apart now till 3pm the next Saturday.

reckon it’d be boring though without it.

Sometimes you get posters who avoid tackling the debate head on and choose instead to fall back on some hilarious meme, Photoshopped shenanigans, or whatever they’ve dug up from YouTube. I don’t know why they bother to be honest.

Anyway, check this out:

Neil runs a very good site personal abuse is not allowed to go to far, threats of violence are quickly jumped on.  Even though i have no problems with people expressing themselves by swearing having a swear filter makes people more inventive in choice of words and makes for a calmer site.

Fans of clubs who just want to come on and be abusive are few and far between.

All contributes to better debate where you can concentrate on the subject of the thread.

So well done to Neil and to yourself for the time and effort you put in to the site.

Nail on head as usual Snooty.

Much more enjoyable back then.

We went, they won, they lost.

We moaned or celebrated in the pub Saturday night. Then it was gone and on to the next match.

PL and Social media have screwed the game for ever

And it’s screwed the game in more ways than simple debate and analysis.

When I was a kid I used to cycle a mile to the footy pitch with my mates after school, play for two hours, cycle two miles home for tea, then cycle two miles back to the footy pitch after tea  for the second half, then home again.

I’ll bet you that’s how footballers were made before social media and the World Wide Web.

Jumpers for goalposts and all that.

I’ll just get on my penny farthing and toddle off....

I do miss those snap decisions on matchday

Staring up at the kitchen clock and thinking 'I could still make it down to Shrewsbury'

Ten minutes later: 'pushing it now' and having to settle for watching the teleprinter at quarter to five

And The Green Un arriving in the post every Tuesday morning - that was a highlight in every week

But then I think of Club Call, or looking through all the morning papers before buying the one that might give us a mention

And suddenly the internet feels like a godsend

It is 24hrs a day Wednesday - although I do sleep sometimes

You have to be selective, but there's Owlstalk, various podcasts, news sites and full match replays at my fingertips

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be
