"Owlstalk 70's and 80's ..."

Recommended Posts

Nail on head as usual Snooty.

Much more enjoyable back then.

We went, they won, they lost.

We moaned or celebrated in the pub Saturday night. Then it was gone and on to the next match.

PL and Social media have screwed the game for ever

Owlstalk would've been in meltdown in the summer of 84 when Wilkinson replaced Big Jack a fecking ex PE teacher, pity there aren't any Ex PE teachers around today we could hire and make a big success of it

No tickets, you woke on the morning of the game home or away and if you fancied it off you went.

Now you have to join summat,  get enough points, apply for tickets, collect tickets, get searched, present tickets all this time worrying that you might have lost it.

You just turned up home or away and always got in pretty quickly.

‘ Keith Ellis up front against Man U away ? You must be joking.

’ How the hell did Springett let that half hit shot by Baldwin just trickle past him? Cost us the Cup. Useless.

’That Gerry Young should never play first team football again after that blunder. Just not good enough.

Good job they were simpler , more forgiving times

I guess it depends what else would be introduced off of the "football technology" you talk about . Would we have phones like we do now, tablets, laptops, the giant social media platforms which we can gorge on over our 512Mb broadband connections? If we had, then I doubt it would be any different, even if other technologies hadn't quote caught up.

But it's not the technology that's to blame; it's a change in human psychology brought on by the anonymity of the screen. It's something people hide behind, re-invent themselves through, and it's that, in my opinion, which has changed our attitudes towards the game and many other aspects of life. And I salute it, because it gives everyone a voice, and as we all know, it doesn't take long for people to know who they should, and shouldn't listen to.

I SAID, it doesn't take lon.....oh FFS!

Pay on the day with pound notes. In them days, an 'all ticket match' meant it was a special game. Big fixture on the calendar & then turn up to see all the TV lorries there. We're gonna be on MOTD! Might even be the main match.

Young boys, in the park, isn't it, wasn't it? Marvellous.

Rolling off the train special & being herded around. Feeling a bit notorius with a police escort. Crap really but entertaining.

social media back then was the green un queue

tremendous banter  that's if you knew the result,  who scored, where you were in the league etc  miss those times tbh

you had to read it fast cos yer dad wanted to read it and god forbid you creased it

but later there was nowt like savouring a greenun when we won and especially with a city double

When I think back..there was always someone walking in the pub.. tapping a newspaper with the back of their hand..here have a look at this and we'd crowd round and look..the local papers were a big thing then..

They were mate. I was a newsagent in those days and I shifted loads on the back of a good result

That raises something I was talking about with a pal a while ago.

There's this popular thing about intent warriors hiding behind their usernames etc etc.

Yet we both noted and agreed that some of the very worst diatribe is actually on Facebook and Twitter with people using their own names!

Yet on here , where you can really fo under cover... it doesn't seem half as bad or abused.  There's the odd heated debate. Or WUM.

The oddest are the ones who abuse players using their own names.

I've not thought of that - in this context - but you and your pal are bang on the money. Why do people do that I wonder? Do you think they forgot "where" they are, and almost feel like they are having a private one-on-one conversation? Or do they just not care anymore? I hate to say it, but I think it's the latter. But as I said, everyone should have a voice; for me it's just a question of who I filter out.

Maybe on here, because deep down we all share the one common denominator, even when there are heated debates or WUM's goin off fishing, we somewhere still connect despite the diatribe, unless it becomes personal and abusive, which fortunately it doesn't often.

It's an interesting debate you've started.

I've had some great debates on here.  Some friendly , some at times a bit  lively, sometimes getting very snarky, but never any abuse that I can remember.  I've still got a couple of the old sparring partners. Some I think enjoy and deliberately  give me a little playful jab with the needle to get me going sometimes!!  But all in good spirit. I think! From my end anyway!

I've hardly dished out any negs in all my time on here. I'd always rather debate the point, even with folks who wont budge ay all! :laugh:The few I have, have been when people have gone beyond the pale, wishing death on folks, that sort of thing.

The ones I never understand are the zero post neggers. Who never have their say.  Come on in and join the debate. It's always interesting to see what and why people don't agree.
