Steve Bruce is a pragmatic 57 year old manager who favours 3-5-2 and has been promoted to the top flight on 4 occassions with two different clubs. He has previously walked away from clubs when he fell out with the chairman over transfers.

Jos Luhukay is a pragmatic 54 year old manager who favours 3-5-2 and has been promoted to the top flight on 3 occassions with 3 different clubs, once with a record points total. He has previously walked away from clubs when he fell out with the chairman over transfers.

I'm note quite sure they're sufficiently different to rip up all pre season plans with under a fortnight to go until the end of the transfer window and start of the season, pay out compensation to sack a whole coaching team and hire a new one.  THINK!!!!

Nicely put squire.

Oh and 4 four promotions with 2 different clubs sounds great until you mention that  therefore there must have been 2 relagations with those 2 clubs on that cv lol

Classic Grandad thread.

Difficult to tell whether he is being serious or just putting something out there and sitting back and watching it go at times.

He likes to voice support for the team, get behind them etc. but has been pretty critical of Jos from early on. He also likes to see the club be mindful of the finances and not get into deals that could cause problems for the club in that respect yet seemingly advocates taking on someone who would surely covet one of the biggest managerial salaries in the division and would expect a budget to match! lol

It could be argued that the last sentence would define whether we're 'serious about promotion' or not. Maybe that's the point of the thread?

I’ve always liked the idea of Bruce here, generally finds a way to get teams up there.

However, it wouldn’t happen now. M I think Jos finished the season strongly, he needs to show us what he can do now with the pressure on and match his record in Germany.

The pressure was on him last season imo...we were in real danger of going down.

If anyone expects us to have the kind of budget that would pay for one of the most expensive managers in the division and give him a budget to match this summer then they are kidding themselves.

We have invested plenty in recent seasons and being 'serious about promotion' doesn't purely come down to how much you spend in every transfer window as others have proved.

He took over from RDM who had already spent a fair bit. They were doing badly and he managed to sort the dressing room out and integrate a few youngsters. He was fortunate to have Xia backing that change financially but he did halt a slide and ultimately got them to the play off final.

Di Matteo was given 2 months - it was hardly a club in crisis on the verge of relegation - Bruce had 3 quarters of the 1st season to get them back on track and then a full season having spent plenty on transfer fees and plenty more on wages at a club with more pulling power than most if not all in the Championship. He basically achieved what Carlos managed but with a bigger budget.

He has achieved plenty at this level before, I never said he was a bad manager - just that he would be a very expensive one, which doesn't fit with where we are currently.

Just about done at Villa.

If we are serious about promotion we should be crawling over brken glass to fetch him in before the season starts.

Thanks for keeping us up Jos.

If he didn't get villa up last year how will he get us up? lol

He'd know exactly how to wheel & deal - and with his connections he'd probably have us back on track with FFP

I'd fully expect him to ship out FF and Bannan for the highest fees possible and bring in the necessary quality to have us challenging - rather than treading water

Bruce loves Bannan there's no way he'd sell him.

Good manager and pound for pound one of the best if not the best at this level.

Personally I think it’s a different job here now to the one it was at the start of Chansiri’s time at the helm.

We probably need a more pragmatic manager who is prepared to work with players that are already here and be more prepared to trust in youth. The early days of Jos’ time in charge suggests the manager we need is already here?

Made Villa one of the most expensively assembled sides in the division and couldn't take them up. Playing dreadful football to boot.

No thanks, I'd rather give Jos a chance

He hasn't taken Villa up but got close. Has got promoted with both Birmingham and Hull. That's why he's highly rated.
