It must have been frustrating though seeing those players leave one by one only to have inferior players brought in every time. We had it (on a smaller scale) in the 90’s, Booth for Bright, Andy Pearce for Pearson, Nolan for Worthingron,  Atherton for Nillsen etc hard to stomach when you’re witnessing your club in reverse

They were still part of the 'top four' and competing in the Champions League back then, though.

They reached the Champions League final at one point while I lived with him, and when Barcelona beat them the meltdown was epic.

Meanwhile, Wednesday were kicking around in League One and the lower end of the Championship. It was difficult not to smile at the lack of perspective at times.

I quite like White but £50m!

Upamecano went for around £38m, Vestegaard for about £15m!

Honestly the transfers for years have been beyond crazy.

Yep my Brighton in laws are loving the fact they got £50m from Arsenal for their 4th best defender.

I’ve never liked Arsenal, people go on about Man Utd glory supporters but living in the south I honestly find it’s Arsenal that attracted the most fair-weather fans.  Soo many business lunches “do you follow football?” “Not really, but I like Arsenal because they play nice football and I like Henry”.

Anyway,  could Arsenal be the first “top 4” club to drop out the PL?  We’ve had Newcastle and Leeds relegated in the past when they were ex-champions league, but Arsenal would be on a another scale to that. If they keep recruiting average players, it could happen

I said go to sh*t after signing new contracts

He scored 15 times last season.

Not amazing by any means but hardly gone to sh*t.

The problem is more to do with the team as a whole. They are miles away from what they aspire to be.

No wonder they were up for being enshrined forever in the elite of football via this superleague thing.

They are firmly in the tier of fodder for the big boys these days.

Yep.

If I were a Chelsea or Man City I'd genuinely see Brentford, Leeds, Newcastle etc as a harder away day then Arsenal

To be fair they spent 50 million quid on one this summer. The problem is he’s had a stinker tonight, and the lad he’s playing with looks like he’s won a competition to play tonight. All over the place the pair of them

Meanwhile, Vestegaard has gone from Southampton to Leicester for £15 million, a very solid and commanding centre half.

I get that Leicester are better than Arsenal these days, but they still should have better pulling power.

They've dodged a bullet with Ramsdale, but selling Martinez was another clanger.  I think Leno suffers from having  no confidence in his centre backs,  but he's still bang average.

It’s crap for him but didn’t help arteta playing him on wing. Either way he’s a shadow of the player he was

Vestegaard is one of them that is unspectacular, probably won't get you an assist out from the back, but will throw himself in front of everything.

Liverpool have Fabinho/Matip, Chelsea have Rudiger, Man Utd have Maguire (although tbf can pass it a bit), Leicester already has Soyuncu. Arsenal seem to constantly fart about with weak CBs, trying to be clever and have them care more about passing than keeping the ball out of the net.

In how many games a season do you really fancy Arsenal to win?

Especially away.. is there an away trip in the league you look at and really think suits Arsenal of have confidence in them winning?

Nobody fears them. They’re a poor, directionless team currently being propped up by some academy talent and the financial brute force to still go out and plug holes with £50m.. £70m signings.

Every weekend have a 3 or 4 fold bet - Simple teams to win bet.

Never do I pick Arsenal, they can be playing bottom of the league and manage to mess it up.

Their (and Tottenham's) inclusion in all that super premier bullshit was beyond galling.

They are just awful.

Will do well to finish top half.

It has been like this with them for so long - they knock it about a bit with little purpose, usually miss the chances they do create and get beat by poor goals.

That second goal on Friday was appalling. Half the defence got beat by the bounce of a loopy long throw. At least Delap used to launch the thing like a scud missile.

It's all about location.

None of these American and Chinese 'fans of the future' will be planning their holiday of a lifetime, where they will casually drop the cost of a season ticket in the club shop on full strips (the posh ones, that the pros wear) and half and half scarves, to Leicester or Leeds.

If they let those kind of clubs in, they would only have to move the franchise to somewhere a bit more glamorous.

They have some very talented players, but as a poster above said, you can't look at one game and think 'yeah, their favourites for that' . I'm not saying they will get relegated,  but they will struggle to get top 10.

Another season out of Europe,  and their best players will be off - Saka, Tierney,  Martinelli, Smith-Rowe.

The centre backs would struggle to start for Norwich or Watford.

The only 'out' for them is to have such a poor start that the useless Arteta gets the boot, and a more experienced,  respected manager comes in and ups the effort and commitment.

They need a proper manager for sure. I’d be on my hands and knees begging Emery back, but he wouldn’t anyway. I’m convinced a good manager will get them around the top six. Sounds like there’s something more going on with Lacazette and Auba missing from the game too
