Wilder’s a good manager but I wouldn’t be trusting him with any more money. His signings since promotion have been dreadful

His skill lies in finding rough gems and turning them into diamonds. Not so good at finding polished gems though. Rough gems tend to be grateful to you for finding them polished diamonds expect you to be grateful to them for playing for you.

You could have just put "jebend" and we'd have got the picture.

He has that core of players who have gotten them this far.

The problem appears to be replacing them and rebuilding the side.

He's still havinh to shop around in the lower leagues or taking a punt on someone unproven, except now they have to pay an inflated fee because of being in the PL. Seems to have an aversion to shopping in the foreign markets, bar Berge who doesn't impress me.

Bit like Bournemouth atm. Eddie Howe had them storming through the divisions, using the same core group of players that were in League One. Spent big to replace them, but five seasons later he was still picking Francis, Smith, Cook, Surman, Gosling and so on.

His dislike of foreign players is his Achilles heel.

The only way a club of United's size has any chance at that level is to shop abroad.

Nobody doubts his ability, but can he handle the egos/temperaments/drama queens which is part and parcel of PL management?

To be fair to wilder, it is very difficult to replace polished turds with the real thing and expect the same level of effort. That seems to be the biggest criticism of them this season that the work rate just isn’t as high. This is when good managers become great managers. Possibly the reason why none of the big clubs will take him? I just can’t imagine him managing the likes of Man U or Chelsea.

Yes, true.

Although the football's different there are similarities to Bassett.

He didn't like star players, presumably because they didn't fit into that workmanlike team ethic which he believed in.

Wilder's the same, and it's probably even more difficult to integrate foreign quality into that system.

And foreigners are the only players a club like United can afford if they want to stay up.

Disagree.

The 'rough gems' he's had like Rodwell, Morrison And the likes he hasn't got a tune from.

His skill is in motivating average players and organising the team to be better than the sun of their parts
