Or maybe we should play to our players strengths instead of putting them under pressure to perform in a position they’re not comfortable in. A central defender as part of a 2 is an entirely different position to that of a 3. Especially when you factor in the players in the wing back roles aren’t essentially natural wing backs.

Think Penny will make a good left wing back.

I agree, he was the shining light yesterday.

It’s a specialist position though and, rotating him with the likes of Harris or Reach, leaves us exposed. I wrote in another thread that our starting 11 with a 352 formation will be competitive. The problems start when players get injured or, subs are required and there’s large proportions of the team playing in an unfamiliar role.

For me we need 2 strikers, a left sided defender and, another central midfielder.

Aston Villa striker Borja Baston has secured a return to Spain after joining Leganes

The Spaniard struggled for minutes after moving to Villa.

Thank gawd for that.

There was nothing last Sunday but we still managed to sign two players in week

Just wish someone would tell the manager we need strikers not more midfielders.

We go into the Cardiff game with only Rhodes as a recognised striker and we won't be getting many points from wales.

I’m pretty sure he knows we need strikers. I’m also pretty sure he’s not in charge of bringing players in.

That old chestnut.

So you think monk sets the budgets, controls who leaves the club, scouts the players, negotiates with the clubs, negotiates with the potential incoming players? As well as coaching the team?

Think Chansiri would pay £3m for Murphy

If there’s any truth in that £3m figure or wether he would come here ... who knows

Think he's a snip at that price but both the fee and wages could be a problem. I know we had £1m set aside for Leko initially, but then again, Windass' fee might only have been used because Leko failed.

Murphy or Jutkiewicz would be absolutely incredible signings anyway.

I accept that we need at least another option in the striking department.

But all this doom and gloom, and almost acceptance that we simply won't be able to win a game until we sign another striker, is ridiculous.

Having a goalscorer is often a luxury...it's not a necessity.

Many teams have been promoted from this league, without relying on a particularly goalscorer. Loads of teams, every single season, compete with that luxury.

First and foremost, what needs to happen with this team, is they need to start been able to believe they can keep clean sheets. That hasn't happened for a long time, and that's why we've become so reliant on goalscorers.

In the 2014-15 season, we finished 19 points clear of the relegation zone (surpassing our primary aim for this season) with a top goalscorer with EIGHT goals (Maguire and Nuhiu). In the 2016-17 season, when we finished with a huge 81 points, our top goalscorer scored 12 goals (Forestieri) and only Fletcher also made double figures.

We weren't successful in those season because of our ability to score goals...but because we kept clean sheets...and a lot of them. If we can become an organised unit, then the amount of goals we'll be required to score to achieve our goals, will be considerably less.

I agree, we could get goals spread throughout the team, without a prolific out and out striker. As long as we're more effective as a team; more solid, creative and dynamic, goals should come more spread out through the team.

Our first League opponents this season, are an example of that last season. Apart from Brentford, I don't think any of the top sides last season had a prolific scorer? It seemed they had goals spread throughout their teams, they had different ways of winning and were effective at both ends of the pitch.

My biggest concern at present is the balance of the team. If we do persist with 3-5-2, then we need our remaining signings to suit that formation, I feel we need another wing back, a defensive midfielder and at least another striker to get the most out of that formation.

I think we miss Murphy the most and his return or signing someone similar, would help a lot for the balance and effectiveness of the team. A target man would help but I think a striker with more mobility would benefit us even more, in order to link up with our attacking midfielders and to get onto Bannan and Brown's clever passes and through balls.

Windass and kahcunga

Both midfielders what's your point.

Kachunga in the last 3 season has played 81% of his games right wing, and we new from when Windass was here last he's an attack minded midfielder.
