BREAKING - Jos Luhukay explains Westwood Situation at #SWFC

Recommended Posts

To be fair, everyone agrees this season is a write off, mid-table finish looking probable. So why not use this season to get our young keepers bedded in?? Westwood will probably leave at the end of the season anyway, I'm sure he would have been sold if an offer had come in

Can't say fairer than that IMHO. Every player has to earn the right to play. If you are coming back from injury you can't just expect to walk back into the team based on reputation.

So you think Westwood's been relegated to third choice because JL sensed that he expected to get straight back in the side?

Good that Fletcher, Lees, Bannan, and FF are all so humble, I suppose.

You know this how,?

I don't but it would make sense, given our financial position and the rumours of players not being picked due to triggering bonuses.

It's just another in a long list of decisions which do not appear to make sense. As very little info comes out of the club  people are more likely to speculate.

Jos Luhukay has moved to clarify the situation regarding the selection of goalkeepers at the club.

The Owls’ first two games of the new campaign have seen academy products Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith named in the matchday squads.

Dawson has started both fixtures between the sticks and the absence of Keiren Westwood has prompted a number of questions in the direction of the manager.

Luhukay said: “I’ve have tried to be clear about the situation.

“With the goalkeepers, we have spoken to them and they are clear.

“We made the decision after pre-season to start with Cammy in the goal in the Championship.

“Joe Wildsmith will be in the cup and will play on Thursday at Sunderland.

“Keiren Westwood is number three and must wait for his chance if something happens to Joe or Cammy. That is the situation.

“From January I have been working with two young very talented goalkeepers, 22 and 23, who have also the future for the club.

“They have been here a very long time and they have made a fantastic job in the last five months.

“Joe Wildsmith has been fantastic for us in the league and Cammy was excellent in the cups.

“I let him play in the league the last three games of last season with a view of finding out if he is a goalkeeper who can start from the beginning.

“Joe had a little bit more experience, Cammy not so much but these two goalkeepers can play for Sheffield Wednesday for a long, long time.”

He continued: “That is our decision. In the time before that, I have not worked with Keiren, I must go on what I see in the last seven months and that is why we make this decision.”

All this does it show that Jos is flipping deluded. Westwood is light years ahead over those 2. Play youth when we don’t have someone like him about. Madness especially given the brittle defence in front of the keeper.

No. I am assuming that Jos and Nicky have seen nothing in KW's work that puts him ahead of the other two keepers. That's seeing him now and not remembering him 8 months ago.

I am not suggesting he is being punished for expecting to be no. 1

He gets asked a question, he answers the question honestly, he still gets pelters for it and people saying he is lying. Are we turning into Leeds? wanting a manager out every 6 months? He has said over the last 7 months Cammy has one the number 1 shirt. That is his opinion. There might be lots of factors for this. 1 being if he doesn't start playing these really talented youngsters they will leave, also he wants to develop these young players compared to Westwood who is on the final stretch of his career. The stick Jos is getting for straight talking is a nonsense. Westwood is the best keeper i've seen at Wednesday, but i still respect the managers decision and can see why it is better for us in the long term to keep 2 really talented youngsters by playing them.

That explains nothing.  Is jos telling us that in 7months he hasn't worked with KW.  I just wish the club would be clear about what is going on.  I'm as sick of JL avoiding questions as i was of Carlos talking in riddles.

it explains everything that you don't like the explanation is another matter . ….

Westwood was all over the place when he played last season. Had he not got injured he surely would have been dropped anyway. Forget what he did in previous seasons, he was awful last season. He looked really shaky and was rushing about the place like a 15 year old joyrider on a Vespa.

I think Dawson will be great this year.
