I think retaining most of the squad is even more ambitious. Ok lets retain part of the squad get shot of the long term/ injury prone players and lets stop signing journey men. on big money. It aint working. Sunderland stopped doing that some years ago and at least they have a chance of getting out of this league. Rotherham very raely sign anyone of notde and look whats happened there. There problem is they cant build on success, I just wish we had the opportunity. Look at the average of our squad, 28. I bet most of these players have had at 5 or 6 possibly more clubs in their career up to signing for Wednesday. It seldom works.

My argument would be we just missed out on promotion after a chaotic summer trying to assemble a new squad. Let's not over react and simply strengthen where we can. Evolution over revolution.

I stayed long enough to watch the players reaction at the end. Luongo and BPF both made a point of applauding all sides of Hillsborough. Looked like goodbye to me.

I think Paterson and Luongo will both be off at the end of their contracts. Doubt we can afford to keep them too.

Where were our weak links this season?

 

1. Real pace up front (still)

2. Legs in midfield

3. Bannan being our only creator.

4. Sloppy on set pieces

5. Lack of ball-playing defenders for a team trying to play out from the back.

 

Assuming we're going to carry on playing 3-5-2, I'd therefore look to bring in;

 

1. A pacey striker to play up with Gregory.

2. A good young stand-in/alternative for Gregory 

3. A replacement for Luongo in midfield (though maybe Adenarin is the man?)

4. A technical/skillful ball-carrying winger/forward midfielder

5. 2x centre backs comfy and capable of playing put from the back

6. A proper old head centre back (e.g. Dean)

7. Reliable Goalkeeper (BPF was fine, just can't see him coming back)

 

 

All those will take us up a level and enable us to play consistently better football on the deck.

I'd also focus on trying to sign younger players too.

 

 

Render was one of the U23s told he was going to be released like Waldock etc

Think we need a couple of wing backs too, add some proper competition for places for Hunt and Johnson.
