Owls defender Liam Palmer has signed a new three-year contract at Hillsborough.

The Wednesday academy product will continue the journey with his boyhood club with his new deal running until summer 2022.

Palmer graduated through the Wednesday youth set-up to make his first team debut in August 2010 in a 1-0 League Cup win over Bury at Hillsborough.

The full back’s maiden league start came in the February 2011 trip to Bournemouth as Palmer continued his steady progress within the senior ranks.

After posting 20 appearances during Wednesday’s 2011/12 promotion season, Palmer spent the full 2012/13 term on loan with Tranmere before returning to S6 and enjoying a hugely productive 2013/14, where he landed a string of top awards.

The right back scooped the official SWFC Player of the Year, SODA, the Wise Old Owls, the Owls Foundation and The Star SWFC Player of the Year award.

The Worksop-born defender has made 224 appearances in total for the Owls and was a mainstay in the team through the 2018/19 campaign, where he flourished in the backline.

His performances at both right and left back earned Palmer the plaudits and his maiden cap at senior international level for Scotland in March 2019.

Pretty rare these days that a player spends his whole career at one club.

Always been consistent, doesn't get injured, can cover a number of positions and has improved year on year.

Been offered 3 years which is testament to the fact that Bruce rates him.

Been offered contracts by four or five Wednesday managers now. A player rated by managers but underrated by fans.

Depends on the weekly wages but 3 years seems a bit much. He improved last season in contrast to before but was only really ‘ok’ in my opinion. We desperately need a decent established left back and I’d say both Iorfa and Odubajo would be ahead a right back. For footballing reasons he perhaps should have dropped down a level to play week in week out and kick on.
