Excellent post @davetherivelinowl.

It's basically confirmed what I've thought of Palmer for a long while ..

He reminds me of my 19 year old ..

Everything's an effort and he's a sulky so and so.

It's been said many times on here he's not up to the Championship standard

And very soon he may well be at his level but taking us with him too.

Which is a shame because like a lot  in this squad the attitude in ratio to salary /income is shocking ....

Lots of goals we concede come straight down the middle of the pitch either due to lack of numbers in there or centre halves being pulled out of position

if only we had a tough tackling midfielder sat doing nothing that could improve this area 100%

And if that tough tackling midfielder was mobile, had good distribution, was inspirational and a was crowd favourite also. If we had such a player then only a fool would leave them out unless he was instructed to that is.

our defending is woeful but its also the players in from of them , getting up with a back 4 and lightweights like bannan pelepussy and reach in front of them will always lead to us conceding , when we had Hutchinson lee in that midfield the back 4 had more cover . I think at the min we cant play with a back 4 it has to be 3 centre halves with reach wide left and palmer wide right , I think any of us good do a better job making us harder to beat than clueless jos.

The full back should also make the utmost effort to get back. If Palmer had done that on all four occasions we wouldn’t have conceded four goals.

I try not to criticise players especially when they make mistakes but I will criticise when there is a lack of effort and/or desire. I’ve see this many times with Palmer and I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s a lazy player. I might also add that I don’t think he’s the only one.

I know the highlights don't show this, but it all opened up in front of where I was stood. First goal Palmer went on a run. Fletcher played a shocking ball leaving him stranded. Fletcher the dived in to try and retrieve the situation making it worse. Palmer had zero chance of getting back.

The other goals were also due to losing possession in bad areas. Not Palmers biggest fan but there were plenty worse than him yesterday.

Great post.

When a full back is caught up field the CDM should cover for me (Pelupessy)

I agree, but which goal and which CDM, as Bannan and Pelupessy were both playing CDM poorly.

Bannan should be no where near CDM, and I'm not convinced Pellupessy is the answer either.

However, tactically they are obviously not getting the guidance for the position they are being asked to play.

This game showed why we are conceding so many goals. Look at the goals from yesterday.

Goal 11865535602_2attheback1.2.thumb.png.81c1e648ab256957b3826c2cea35e0ff.pngPalmer has been caught upfield. But no-one has slotted in to cover for him.

Conway runs unhindered. No-one puts in a challenge. He slips it to Dack.

When Dack shoots (above) we are wide open on both flanks. Thormiley has come inside leaving Graham free and Palmer isn’t exactly busting a gut to get back. Dack shoots, Graham scores.

Goal 2

1807510007_2attheback2.2.thumb.png.f1e4fa1611fb9912f342cf434874a915.pngThere’s no pressure on the player with the ball

There’s a huge gap in front of our back 4. Isn’t it Pelupessy’s job to plug that hole?

There’s a huge gap behind Palmer who’s been caught upfield again

There’s a huge gap behind Thorniley so both full backs are so far out of position that it’s 3 against 2. A flat back 2!

Graham runs in behind one full-back and passes it to Dack who’s behind the other full-back. Easy goal.

Goal 3

611485779_2attheback3.1.thumb.png.d2643d46f3ffcea60b01cde36f4ef2cd.pngDack runs at goal with nobody near him and a huge space in front of him because the centre-halves look like they’re getting out of the way

Palmer has been caught upfield (sound familiar) so there’s a huge gap in the right-back slot.

By the time Dack has his shot, Palmer is getting close to Graham but he carries on sauntering so Graham is miles from him by the time he scores.

Goal 41456903571_2attheback4.1.thumb.png.bfcb00ede7c0368bdf1f9ee62a0f6004.pngOMG look at that hole in front of the back 4.

1764907997_2attheback4.2.thumb.png.7c85be3638aa8696b4cbc36354bf1238.png

Moments later there’s still a huge hole. The player on the ball has no-one within 10 yards of him. But at least this time Palmer is in the right-back spot and is close enough to mark Graham822199848_2attheback4.3.thumb.png.754b0b33a5e2cd2505e3723ecef28a43.pngNot any more! Dack slips it to Graham who is completely unmarked.

Issues:

Huge spaces behind the full-backs. Palmer needs to look at his contribution to all 4 goals. It’s one thing to be caught upfield, it will happen to all full-backs. But it’s another to have no desire to get back in position. It’s like he just doesn’t care. I love Thorniley but he’s not a full-back. He has a tendency to go back to his centre-half position and leave a space where the left back should be. But then neither full-back got any help from those in front of them.

Huge spaces in front of the back 4. I’ve always defended Pelupessy; he might be limited but he does get about and chase down balls. But oh dear this really shows that he’s actually offering no cover to those behind him. But it’s not down to one man. With Fletch up front we still have 5 people who should be making a wall in front of the back 4

No pressure on the man with the ball. As above. That should be what Pelupessy is doing but also what should be happening as a midfield unit.

The obvious scapegoats here are Palmer (and Thorniley) and Pelupessy (and Bannan) but really the problems are all about shape and formation. This seems to be the opposite of a well-coached side. There seems to be no evidence that Jos ever says ‘If he goes there, you have to go there’. Either that or the players just can’t be xxsed to help each other out.

It’s as if Jos thinks we are playing a high-pressing game. He throws bodies forward to chase the ball but none of them get anywhere near it and just get by-passed leaving no cover for the defence. A high press without anyone actually doing any pressing.

Tactically this has to be the least organised side I've ever seen. I don't think Jos has a clue.

You've beat me too this post. The club is really going to regret offering full match replays to the mugs like you and me who bought the Radio commentary package at the start of the season

lol

Goal three is the Cherry on the cake of Jos' defensively inept tactics.

Personally I think Palmer and Pellupessy are the heroes of this shambolic goal, but their team mates read the game poorly / don't understand the formation / tactics.

We end up in this position as Pellupessy has gone into midfield three times to challenge for the ball and it keep coming back to him to clear, eventually he ends up on his backside and Palmer has gone into midfield to make a challenge, both Pellupessy and Palmer are now chasing the ball back.

The stars of the show are Lees and Hector, who have been run ragged up to now covering wide for our fullbacks throughout the game. (Jos forgot / was unable to explain to Pellupessy and Bannan clearly that they were responsible for covering for the full backs in his formation. ( Or conversely he forgot to tell the full backs to stay back and cover in a flat back four)

The end result Lees Hector and Pellupessy all ball watching and none of them close the ball down. And look who's lurking in the background unmarked. Hatrick hero Danny Graham. Hector should really have covered Graham here, but he'd been here there and everywhere, just like Lees, who should have really gone to the ball and stopped Dack from making a shot

None of them are bad players, but who ever is explaining the tactics to them is very poor at doing so.

Gary Megson will quickly sort out this mess, if he's given the chance.

If 1 fb is upfield the other should not be as advanced.

There should not be big gaps between cb's and fb's but the captain should try and address this as well as the manager.

Palmer is a failed cm come failed rb, he has no sense of danger, awareness or desire which is shame because he could have been a decent player imo.

All the defence and jp were poor but we were also below par with the ball.

We never get simple low crosses in for easy chances due to players cutting inside on stronger foots, like reach playing on the right/matias on left etc

Our fb's are not capable of getting the crosses in to make up for the midfielders/forwards.

We play too narrow going forward but too wide and open when defending!

New manager needed.

The book stops with the manger for me with regards defending. The gaps are huge and this is a manager renowned for his defensive discipline. Well his teams don’t attack much do they and they cannot defend either. Absolute embarrassment.

Agree. No organisation. Wonder what on earth they do in training? Neither Palmer or Thorneley are natural full-backs so selection is also an issue

In the interests of balance though. The players should find the desire and professionalism within themselves to run, mark and try

Lets not crucify Palmer for goal number four.

Way before Palmer gets the blame you see Thorniley trying to clear after Pellupessy and Bannan have played the ball back to him.

Our Midfield / Defensive midfielders of Bannan and Pellupsesy are in line with him, and yet he plays it into midfield, where as you can imagine there are not Wednesday players, other than Reach to try and close it down.

This really should have been cleared up field to the big man to knock down to a supporting team mate or chase down. These prehistoric tactics appears not to be allowed under the current regime.

Gary Megson will sort out this kind of shambolic play.

There are 2 obvious ways to fix that, like mentioned above, you let one full back join in, the fullback on the opposite side drops in to make a 3.

If you want both fullbacks to join in then you have to have a DCM who drops in to make a 3, our defensive shape is awful, we are pathetic in the positive and negative transition.

Im so glad our coaching staff are paid decent wages to get things like this right.

Abandoning our defensive shape and leaving only our 2 Cbs back is crazy, good job we are so creative :ghoulguy:
