Thorniley is only a year up from Penney. At least he's signed though so good news. Thorniley had half a year at Accrington so he was miles ahead.
CraigSGM
A 12 month extension works well actually. Gives him this season to develop, and this time next year we can start looking at a deal that fits where he is as a player after a full season in the senior squad. Avoids both having a player that doesn't cut it on a long term deal, and having one that gets itchy feet 18 months into a 4 year deal because he's being massively underpaid as the star man. RockieOwl
Also surprised at the length of contract. But maybe it's because we can't give him a big pay rise that he may have been expecting. So the club have said if you play well, we will look at it next year and if we don't agree you can walk in 2020
Kanye West
Penney signs new Owls contract Matt Penney has signed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday. The rising star has penned a deal that will see him stay at Hillsborough until summer 2020. Having continued to impress under the guidance of Owls boss Jos Luhukay, Penney’s performances have earned the plaudits during the 2018/19 campaign. The academy product made his senior debut during the 2-0 victory over Sunderland in the Carabao Cup in August and has since produced a series of strong performances to stake a place for a starting XI spot. Penney has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season and was crowned as the swfc.co.uk Player of the Month for September. During his rise to the Owls first team squad, Penney gained valuable experience in loan spells at Bradford and Mansfield before returning to Hillsborough. The 20-year-old has also played a key role for the Owls Under-23s in recent years and was a mainstay in Neil Thompson’s squad, who were crowned as PDL2 North and then National Champions in 2016/17. spiderman
Think its a good move rather than giving him silly money on a long deal......see what he becomes then negotiate later on down the line,SWFC using their heads for once.

asteener1867
Think about it though... He's had good games, he's had a couple not so good.. 18 months, after another season we might know what we have on our hands as regards the future....then the balls in our court isn't it? Good news I reckon, think the lads a decent prospect.........(My opinion is of very little value)

bigash_swfc
Great news. These youngsters don't know how good they are. They don't have a ceiling on their ability like a Jones, Boyd, Westy etc..... Sky's the limit.
S26 Owl
Ties him down until we know whats happening with finances. Means we either 1) get a fee for him or 2) can extend it when we know whats going on. We have a lot of players on contracts that are too long and risked on players who are either not good enough or injured. We don't actually know how Penney's career will end up considering 6 months ago he wasn't even in the picture. Wise decision by katrien and co and will keep him focused on the performances rather than sitting on his arse collecting his cash
jonesy87shef
Good news. Would’ve assumed it’d be a bit longer, but no complaints. Hopefully he will continue to develop and we renegotiate again in the summer.

0114
This ain’t good news what so ever. In 12 months we are going to be in the same position we are now however the lad will be more experienced and have a lot more interest.

HOOTIE AND THE SHIT TU
I'm a bit disappointed in the length of contract to be honest To me, it looks like we've done the bare minimum and are going to cash in at the first opportunity Just a bloke, who used up all his luck in one go when he met his wife. He’ll be sought after and can pick his deal - and that might not be ours. Would have expected 2021 as a minimum given he’s a first team regular now. Still, it’s better than his contract situation was 24 hours ago!
NeonLeon
Takes him of Dev Squad wage and still leaves him with something to prove. As others have said Thorniley was very much battling for a starting spot going into this season so it makes sense he was given a longer deal. striker
Great news. Curious contract length but suppose reasonable to reward development to date and keep him hungry to kick on and earn another deal
