Penney Signs New Deal

Not really when he signed it though.  it was well before the end of last season when he had played less games than Penney has now.  Thorniley is only a year up from Penney.  At least he's signed though so good news.

Thorniley had half a year at Accrington so he was miles ahead.

A 12 month extension works well actually.

Gives him this season to develop, and this time next year we can start looking at a deal that fits where he is as a player after a full season in the senior squad.

Avoids both having a player that doesn't cut it on a long term deal, and having one that gets itchy feet 18 months into a 4 year deal because he's being massively underpaid as the star man.

Penney signs new Owls contract

Large

Matt Penney has signed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday.

The rising star has penned a deal that will see him stay at Hillsborough until summer 2020.

Having continued to impress under the guidance of Owls boss Jos Luhukay, Penney’s performances have earned the plaudits during the 2018/19 campaign.

The academy product made his senior debut during the 2-0 victory over Sunderland in the Carabao Cup in August and has since produced a series of strong performances to stake a place for a starting XI spot.

Penney has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season and was crowned as the swfc.co.uk Player of the Month for September.

During his rise to the Owls first team squad, Penney gained valuable experience in loan spells at Bradford and Mansfield before returning to Hillsborough.

The 20-year-old has also played a key role for the Owls Under-23s in recent years and was a mainstay in Neil Thompson’s squad, who were crowned as PDL2 North and then National Champions in 2016/17.

Think about it though...

He's had good games, he's had a couple not so good..

18 months, after another season  we might know what we have on our hands as regards the future....then the balls in our court isn't it?

Good news I reckon, think the lads a decent prospect.........(My opinion is of very little value)

Ties him down until we know whats happening with finances. Means we either 1) get a fee for him or 2) can extend it when we know whats going on.

We have a lot of players on contracts that are too long and risked on players who are either not good enough or injured. We don't actually know how Penney's career will end up considering 6 months ago he wasn't even in the picture. Wise decision by katrien and co and will keep him focused on the performances rather than sitting on his arse collecting his cash

Ball won’t really be in our court if he continues to develop and only has 6 months left on his contract. He’ll be sought after and can pick his deal - and that might not be ours.

Would have expected 2021 as a minimum given he’s a first team regular now.

Still, it’s better than his contract situation was 24 hours ago!
