Penney Signs New Deal

A 12 month extension works well actually.

Gives him this season to develop, and this time next year we can start looking at a deal that fits where he is as a player after a full season in the senior squad.

Avoids both having a player that doesn't cut it on a long term deal, and having one that gets itchy feet 18 months into a 4 year deal because he's being massively underpaid as the star man.

I think it could’ve done with another year as he will be in his final year again next season, which means that we would never get the best deal for him if he did want to move on.

With Doyen involved I am always sceptical

Makes sense if they both agreed that at this time Wednesday can't offer him wages he deserves.

In the summer, with most of high paid players gone they could agree to better suited contract for both sides.

I heard that Penney is huge Wednesdayite, and was desperate to resign.

How dare they bring this news when everything is supposed to be w*nk at minute?

Yes, I'm sure that this nugget of good news will be engulfed by a tidal wave of ill feeling, unguarded comments, despair and bitter recrimination a few days hence... lol

Surely young players who are showing promise and are in a decent shop window and have a savvy agent behind them would be in favour of a short contract.  If the club start taking off again and show signs of real progression then he will more than likely sign a longer contract next time. If not then he has the option of jumping ship.  The players are in a strong position now.

It’s all to make sure he’s not a flash in pan if he keeps performing when it comes up to 1 year left I’m sure we will extend again. If he drops of and is none existent we’ve not commit ourselves to a player that we can offload easier

This ain’t good news what so ever. In 12 months we are going to be in the same position we are now however the lad will be more experienced and have a lot more interest.

If he does well this season he'll be offered a new one in the summer.

Good.

Now stop playing him in Central Mid and up front.

Ffs.

Good to get him signed. Now play him left back and let’s see him develop. Swanning around in midfield or left of a front three is doing him no favours

Personally think he'd be better further forward on the left in a 442. Some big weaknesses defensively

Exactly,

if other clubs come in for him, and he wants away we can make money, if it works out for him here and he wants to stay, he can sign an extension.

If other clubs come in for him and offer enough he would be off anyway for big money. From the summer onwards clubs can get him for a reduced value due to his contract running down or take a gamble on compensation.

Given that players like Joao signed up to 2021 suggest to me that this isn’t a P&S issue.

Weird length of contract.  He has another good 6 months this season and develops into an awesome prospect and then Prem or foreign clubs can just nick him following season.

It's a compromise because we can't afford to pay him what Doyen wanted, because of FFP. He obvs wants to stay and be loyal but advice was, "give them another year to show loyalty, play well and they'll be forced to sell you Summer 2019 rather than lose you for nothing"

Well done Wednesday!

We have an absolute no hoper like Nuihu given a two year extension, when he should have been dumped and we only give Penny a one year deal

Theres absolutely no logic at Hillsborough to contracts or anything whatsoever.

It's a farce down there

give him a 3 year deal and it could just as easily go the other way ... he doesn't play well but don't worry as your  contracted to 2022. …….a couple of decent games doesn't really warrant a long contract ,he's still got a lot to prove ……….it's a gamble giving out long contracts to young players who still have a lot to prove as we may well find out with the 5 year deal that wildsmith got .
