Have you ever been in an away end?

Recommended Posts

Leeds 1969/70? When we won the cup replay 3-1, fayther made a mistake!! Me, him and mother mostly petrified all match, but we won thanks to Brian Woodall! Tee-hee!

Liverpool Kop end in 1970, season we were relegated, lost 2 or 3 nil, went with Albert Clayton in his red mini for a 7.30kick off. When we got back to it after the game someone had broken the drivers door handle trying to break into it, took us ages to break in through the rear window, home very late that night!!

Can't remember any others but the relegation season went to a fair few away games, Man U away 2-2 they were trying to let us win, Forest I remember but not in away end, and then that twonk Bowyer pops up with two goals to sink the ship!!

I think you mean the home end. It was a regular thing in the naughty 70"s. The ones that stick out are Derby numerous times, Charlton in the FA Cup when Millwall turned up. Swindon, Oxford, Reading, Preston, Blackpool, Oldham,  Millwall (bad idea), Sunderland (did'nt last long as only about 100 of our fans got through the turnstiles before the rest got stopped by plod), Burnley. Also a few of us went on the Shed at Chelsea so we could stop being kept in after the game.another bad idea as we nearly came a cropper. Swansea when we were banned and did get sussed and had to make a quick exit round the pitch. Loads more clubs who are now in league one & two. Pompey was one which again was a stupid idea as we were grossly outnumbered. Could write a book as some stupid and crazy moments. Example, our fans setting fire to the rubbish under the home ends at Preston and Chester while we were stood on it, fire brigade actually turned up.

That was how it was, you did it as a matter of course. Once on, you either stayed put, were moved on by the old bill, or you ended up getting a kicking

I remember being in the main stand at Swindon that day, hottest day that year, we thought we were the only ones until we scored and half the stand went up.

I've also done it at Leicester (both grounds), Coventry (League Cup quarter final in 1990-91), Sheffield United, Blackburn and probably some others that I've forgotten. Only ever sat on my hands once, that was Leicester away under Turner and I was on my own. We were pretty abysmal that day so it was no biggy.

Same happened at West Ham once, the away end was sold out so we went in the main stand, keeping a low profile as there'd been some naughties earlier on. When Newsome, I think, scored, half the stand stood up.

@ City Ground. Weds v Forest.

Lost 1 - 0. Pineapple Head (Jason Lee) scored a header just in front of where I was sat.

Had to suppress my displeasure that much during celebrations the old guy in front was lucky he didn't get his toupe set alight.

Boxing day 95

Can't believe that I forgot Burnley away in cup quarter final, Chaos full scale brawling going on after our old man chinned a Burnley fan.

They chased us then loads of Wednesday in there end also chased them.

Me and Captain slowly were sat on the Stretford End in the mid nineties when Hirsty almost burst the back off their net with a free kick in the 4th minute right in front of us.. Needless to say we didn't jump up and down with joy (on the outside anyway)

Seem to remember I did jump up (albeit briefly) and you managed to blag it with the surrounding Manure fans to calm em down...

Remember doing Villa Park with you a couple of times too, even going for a drink in their own supporters club...

Aahhh, happy days...

Was a time back in around the early 70s where i never went in the away end,the home ends were always full of Owls.Preston,Hull,Bolton,Nottingham,Blackburn,to name a few.

Ive been on the shoreham end countless times with Owls fans, and every other yorks club except Bradford from memory. It was the done thing back then.

I still do it now given the chance, old habits die hard lol.

Before the game I was discussing the merits of their various squad players with people around us and it turned out I knew more about their players than they did. Mind you I probably lived a lot closer to Manchester than most of their fans

I guess it helped us blend in.

late 70s all part of the grounds belonged to Wednesday. Every single KOP had some Wednesdayites on it at some point.

Some noticeable ones were.

Peterborough. We arrived late and two busloads stormed the nearest gate, Liverpool style forcing it open and running onto the terrace chanting Wednesday. We didn't realise we had stormed their Kop. About 100 of us took the Kop for about 15 min before the Plod moved us around the pitch on to a packed away end. The reception from the owls fans was like welcoming war heros.

Pompy. Most frightened i have ever been. 1 because they are utter loonies. 2. there is no escape to the pitch. It is surrounded by a moat.

York. We just took the City let alone the ground.

Quite a number of times.

Most of the replays in the FA cup v Arsenal in 79. I remember at Highbury leaping in the air when we scored and my neutral mates having to restrain me.

FA cup semi v Brighton. Didn't have much to cheer that day and was by myself

Swindon, Oxford, Wycombe, MK Hockey stadium

Bramall Lane too. Can't remember why.

I remember going to Orient and asking a copper directions to the Wednesday end and he said it didn't matter cause we'd outnumber the home fans 3-1 and "they're very quiet"

Got ushered in to the Coventry end at the Ricoh by mistake with Wednesday tickets. Walking round the concourse in my Wednesday colours a bit bemused 'cos eveyone else seemed to be Coventry. Eventually spotted by a steward and he gave the gate personnel a reyt bllking over the radio before escorting us to our correct seats.

Liverpool ( executive box and home main stand)

Everton   (popular end)

Man Utd   (executive box and main home stand)

Man City   ( Maine Rd home main stand)

Bolton        (home main stand)

Leeds Utd   (home main stand)

Leyton Orient (home main stand)

Rotherham  (home main stand at Millmoor)

Never felt threatened, but Leeds games most volatile. Watched Owls beat Liverpool at Anfield 1-0 (Carlton Palmer goal) no problem and some fans said "well played". I was with 4 Liverpool fans with my wife and 2 kids.

I confess.  Cardiff, with my 2 boys.  Well we weren't going to get tickets in the Wednesday end so I got them online from Hartlepool as soon as they went on sale.  We were in the front row of the top tier, right behind the goal.  My ticket is for  Row 1, Seat 1, so I might have had the first 3 tickets to be sold.  Seeing 3 tiers of Wednesday fans all stand up when we scored was like watching a venetian blind opening.  What a day.

Been going to away games for many years, but I think I've only actually seen us from the home end 4 times:

Pigs, we drew 1-1. Glynn Hodges scored first for them so I had to stand up (couldn't bring myself to pretend to applaud though, but fortunately nobody noticed). Palmer equalised a short time later and I celebrated wildly inside my head but didn't move a muscle.

Liverpool, I went there a few times as a "neutral" as I was going out with a Liverpool fan from Yorkshire who was in their supporters club so was able to get hold of spare season tickets, if Wednesday weren't playing or I couldn't get a ticket for our away game I went there a few times with her. Always rooted for the opposition though! Managed to get to see Wednesday from the home stand twice I think, the first game of the season when we lost 2-0 and Palmer was sent off, and I think we lost 4-1 in the other. Preferred to go in the away end when Wednesday were there.

A pre-season game at Grimsby - dumped the family in Cleethorpes and went to watch the game on my own. We lost 2-1, didn't get a ticket for the away end as they were free I think and all got snapped up - I couldn't be bothered to get up on a summer Saturday morning to go and get one so I paid a tenner on the day and went in the home stand.

Oh, I went in the "home" stand in a friendly at Worksop as well - not that it made much difference as it was pretty much all Wednesday fans everywhere anyway. I was quite intrigued to see some people wearing Worksop Town shirts though.
