Houllier has gone on record saying he was going to take the job but Alex Ferguson told him to wait for another English club cus we were already in free fall...

That was David Moyes.

Houllier talks fell through after saying he agreed the job but the club wouldn’t agree a “divorce clause”.

I remember seeing on the back of the Daily Star we were linked with a move for Juventus midfielder David Platt.

Not sure how much there was in that one but at the same time we were also linked with Australian striker Frank Farino, think there was a lot more in that one.

Obviously the bids for Shearer and Deane are well known.

Pleat had a go for Beckham but got laughed at

Le Tissier rumours were quite common.

Think we tried for Trevor Sinclair when he was at Blackpool, and Collymore when he was at Southend.

And Luke Beckett

I forgot about Beckett, great shout!

We also tried for Scott Taylor and Steve Howard which were big news at the time. We did eventually land Howard, but can remember there being pages on here dedicated to him whilst at Luton.

I don't remember, but did we sign Lombardo in the end?

No, Alan Shearer had just won the golden boot at Euro 96 and signed for Newcastle for a transfer record fee of £15m and it was rumoured Lombardo was asking for similar wages to what Shearer was on.

Shame as he’d have been one heck of a signing.
