Baffling Substitutions

Now don't get me wrong, the first half today was the best we've seen for a long time but 2 of Bruce's subs were completely baffling. Palmer has come on leaps and bounds since Jos left and although I have doubts whether he is good enough for a promotion chasing team he has looked significantly better at right back recently. To take Joao off for Iorfa was bizarre especially when retaining 4-4-2 and Palmer looked totally lost at right midfield. Iorfa appears in a 25 minute spell to have more attacking instinct and quality than Palmer so him right mid would have made more sense. If he'd switched to 3 at the back it would have made a little more sense with Palmer and the outstanding Achraf playing wing backs (although this would have caused an issue for where Aaron's would have played). Then to substitute Fletcher for Joey was equally as puzzling leaving us with no natural forward on the pitch.

What better time to have a look at a few different things than when you’re 3-0 ahead.

Expect more of this if Bruce is as good as his word in giving every squad member a chance to impress.

can’t see it happening if we’re hanging on to a 1-0 lead in the second half though.

Certainly two of the subs could be explained and agreed with. Joao, despite his protestations , had asked earlier for subbing, and had run his race anyway. He was knackered. As for Fletcher, he never really recovered from his nasty fall and appeared to be carrying an injury.

joao knackered?.....you’re joking right?.....he didn’t break sweat all day, in fact he put more effort in to ripping his various bandages off than he did playing football

I think all three who came off were injured or done in meaning it made sense to take them off rather than risk making them worse.

Generally the team had worked hard and looked to be hanging on a bit so Bruce decided to try and tighten things up. Matias let him down by falling asleep and was immediately shifted up front.

Bruce obviously doesn’t rate Nuhiu .

I don't know if it was the players or Bruce, but I thought our game management in the second half wasn't particularly impressive.

After what was an excellent first half, and the best in some time, you could expect a foot-off-the-pedal approach to the second half, but when we broke up what had been a very effective combination of Reach and Palmer down the right (in bringing Iorfa on for João), we had two players that had both been having good games all of a sudden looking lost, and we also had a somewhat toothless looking attack.

It just seemed to set the tone amongst the players that your jobs have been done and now we're going to change three or four things at once and see how it looks, as though it were a training game.

By the time Swansea had missed a few good chances to get it back to 3-2, I was looking forward to the final whistle. It took a lot of the gloss off what had otherwise been a very strong and promising performance in that first half.

I agree with this but Iorfa had a stormer when he came on. You are right about Palmer though. The poor boy was totally lost in midfield!

Did we win ?

It wasn't really about the players that came on - and I agree about Iorfa; he looks the part - it was more about how the whole balance of the team was broken up as if it was okay with 30 minutes to go to start looking at, not the team, but individuals in certain positions.

At 3-0 up it probably was.

And just like he learnt stuff from the Rotherham game. He would have learnt stuff from the last 30 mins today aswell.

I didn't agree with the subs at the time but I certainly understood what was happening.

I suppose the difference between me and Bruce is he's got experience in keeping hold of three points whilst trying to keep his squad as fresh and as motivated as possible.

Scoring three goals early on gives you the ability to be a bit nonchalant really.

Yes mate I totally agree. Just wanted to point out how good Iorfa is as it didn’t come across in your post.

It was too many changes all at once. Not just the change of personnel, but where they were playing and the formation tweaks. It's dangerous stuff and when Swansea went close twice to getting it back to 3-2 (with still ten minutes to go), I doubt anyone would say we were home and dry.

I thought moving palmer to right midfield puzzling as he was doing fine at right back...……..I don't think any of the switches improved the team/performance but when your 3-0 up it's about seeing the game out and we did so I wouldn't be questioning the manager .

I think we've really pulled off quite a coup in bringing Iorfa in. What with Wolves' new-found millions and rise up the divisions, a promising youngster such as Iorfa ends up on the wayside. Well, Wolves' loss (or rather lack of need) is definitely looking like our gain, but I'm overjoyed we've brought him in ahead of what must presumably have been competition for his signature.

Bruce is just trying things out and at 3-0, what better time to do it!?

We aren’t going down and we aren’t going up so he might as well have a look at things.

In just the last few games he’s learned that Bannan isn’t a winger and Matias and Pelupessey aren’t good enough.

We’ll be better off next season for him trying things out now.

Had Jos made those substitutions, this thread would be completely different.

Bizarre is an understatement. Like I said in the Match Ratings thread...hopefully it doesn't become a theme, and I'm reading too much into it...but to make three substitutions, two of which were frankly perplexing (and hugely negative in mindset) could be a little concerning, if it becomes a regular thing.

Had he brought Iorfa and gone three at the back, fine. No issues...it's trying a different system. But to play Palmer in a position he's never going to play long term seemed odd. And then to bring Pelupessy on, go essentially strikerless, when we've got Nuhiu on the bench...is something Jos would've been lynched for.

But nothing to worry about per se. Just something to file in the "Keep Watch" folder.
