Centre Half , but who?

All this bull about left/right footed.

These people are getting payed shed loads of £'s so should be able to kick with both feet.

Yes, they will have a dominant foot, but for the love of god, they do F all else all day....

Get practicing in training to kick with your "weaker foot" so they are comfortable using either !

All you want from a centre half is to be good/dominant in the air, quick(ish) across the ground, be able to read the game, have good positional sense, and to be able to pass it accurately about 20yds (max to fit in with our style of play), to our fluent midfielders who will pick it up and turn defense into attack.

By the same token, why waste money on a top striker, when we can train someone to score the goals. How difficult can it be to score a goal from 12 yards

It's not bull at all.

The academy last season was desperately looking for left-sided centre backs at all age groups because we had a real shortage of left-footed players and it was hindering us. Having a left-footed centre back isn't a requirement, but it sure as hell helps with balance as well as some defensive duties, such as preferring to tackle with your stronger  (left) foot making it more difficult for attackers to go down the outside of your centre back. That said, it isn't the be-all-and-end-all, and the focus should be on getting the best quality we can in... the left-footed aspect would just be a bonus

As to personnel, Tarkowski would be ideal but unlikely... he'll probably want to try and fight for his place in a Premier League team and having only recently moved Burnley will probably want their £3 million+ investment back. He's also probably had a wage increase since getting to the Prem, so that might impact on us too.

Be interesting to see who we bring in, would be very surprised if we don't see another CB turn up in the next month. If it's a signing of a similar quality to Abdi and Fletcher, then I'll be very, very moist.

Defenders will do anything to defend/stop shots, and don't need to do anything fancy, therefore don't need to worry too much about which foot they kick the ball with..
If we are looking for anything else, then an "experienced & cultured" left footed CB is gonna cost mega bucks...

Strikers will always choose their preferred foot, especially when running with the ball to create a goal scoring / shooting opportunity

It doesn't need to be a left footer.  John Terry has been the best left sided centre half in the Premier League for over a decade and he is right footed.

That said, Tom Lees clearly prefers to play as the right sided centre half therefore it does need to be somebody that is comfortable playing as the left sided centre half.  It doesn't seem to bother some and they are equally happy playing left side or right side.  For others it seems to really bother them.

Hanley played left sided centre half for Blackburn last season with Duffy on the right, therefore it appears likely that it is a consideration.

Connolly at Cardiff is happy playing left sided centre half.  He is strong in the air, got their player of the year last season and would seem to be a safe acquisition to me.

Beginning to think we won't be signing one..

CC made a comment about Semedo filling in and some people thought he was joking.  I don't think he was.

Genuinely think he will be cover for Hutch and Lees until Loovens gets back.

Whether he is good enough if another matter, but I have a feeling he will be featuring at the back for the start of the season..Just pray Hutch and Lees stay fit.

He said in his interview yesterday that there were "obvious gaps" we needed filling, including at left back and centre back

Might take until the end of the window, but we'll definitely be getting another CB in by September 1st

I really do think that we need to spend in this area - seen a few suggest on here that any CB coming wouldn't get ahead of Hutch/Loovens anyway - but I've got my doubts about both of these.  Both have fitness issues but I'd also say Loovens isn't the quickest and Hutch isn't dominant enough in the air (needed when playing alongside Lees who isn't the tallest), so I'd love to see us bring in a quality first choice centre back.

We shall see but if Loovens is due back early September it may be put on hold - His injury will be a key factor in this... I think Semedo will be the go to man for the start of the season though.  Not ideal considering who we have to play early doors.

I agree both positions need filling - no adequate cover for Pudil as yet with Helan not up to the required standard: Impact winger possibly, but not a solid LB.

Pretty much agreed by all it needs to be top of our shopping list, but who?, and do we go for young with promise, or old head with experience. What resources should we be making available ?, loan or full signing?

Here`s a few Options..

Harlee Dean, - Brentford ( thing they would want £-4 m , seems to be the going rate, I notice there is talk of making him captain, but I know his agent has hinted at a move to the premier league ( bottom end I would guess, Burnley maybe?, its a well trodden path)

Aden Flint - Bristol, City  Very similar to Hanley, and scores from set pieces ( would expect £5m plus though)

Paddy McNair - Man U, Loan

Shane Duffy - Blackburn  £3 being talked about.

Alfie Mawson - Barnsley

Aaron Pirrie - Wycombe.

i doubt they'd be happy being back up for hutch .....

I like Semedo, think in time he can take to a CB role.....but I watched him closely for the first 20 minutes yesterday and while as strong in the tackle as ever, his positional sense was off, sat too deep at times and against better opposition will be found out at this moment in time anyway until he builds experience in the role. My other concern is his height and would be targeted by the opposition.

Perfectly ok as cover but we need a specialist CB to put pressure on Lees and hutch. Personally, I thought Sasso did ok when needed last year, as a squad player he played his part.

I'm not sure it's helpful to talk about players being dropped for, or even coming in as back up. We want to have 2 quality players for every position, that's Carlos's stated aim, so four centre backs who can all be relied on to come in and do a job. We definitely have that with our right sided options, there isn't much to choose between Lees and Hutchinson. If we can find someone to compete with Loovens on the left side, Carlos will be confident that we can put out a solid pairing, whoever plays

he's a 6 footer, bigger than hutch and only an inch smaller than lees......whether he's good enough i dont know but height isnt a problem .

Teams aiming for promotion don't have Semedo at CB. That worries me a lot, even if it is until September.

Agreed. Just the same that teams aiming for promotion dont have nuhiu anywhere near the first 11
