Building from the back

Noticed there were a few moans and groans from a small number of people in the stands tonight when we were knocking it about at the back and coming under pressure.

 

It might not be how some people want us  or expect us to play, but could we all maybe try and get behind the team and support the managers philosophy.

 

So many times last season we lumped it forward, only to give possession away and the ball come straight back into our own third.

We need our players to have confidence when playing it out, not additional pressure from the fans in the stadium. So let’s all get behind them… and if / when they do make a mistake, we support them and get behind what theyre doing because surely we all want to succeed together.

Saw some people in the matchday thread not happy with it either. I'm not surprised to be fair, it does often look quite dangerous, but if you take a step back and look at the bigger picture I think we created many more attacking situations than we conceded possession in risky areas by passing it out from the back.

 

We're still learning though, hopefully that first 20-25 minutes today is just a glimpse of more to come. It certainly seems worth persevering with to build that understanding.

Heart in mouth stuff at first but they seem very calm and comfortable on the ball and played it out of danger a few times. I'd rather us do that with the players we have rather than just lumping it down field and have it come back up 10 seconds later.

It’s going to cost us a few goals this season, we have to accept that. 
 

But, if it’s going to create a lot more and we can capitalise on the space it creates it’ll be worth it.

Definitely risky at times. It certainly isn't something I would be doing every game.

Think you need better players, to have the confidence to do it.

I don't understand the strategy of building from the back when you've just recovered the ball from an attack and still under heavy pressure. Short passes inside and on the edge of your own box, while you're being pressed by a number of attackers. It seems to invite needless pressure.

I’ve never seen any stats but just a gut feeling is that more goals would be conceded over a season by aimless pumping it up the pitch.

I thought we got the balance right last night. Against Donny I think they tried doing it all game but last night, BPF went long a couple of times to change things up. Our team is built of technically gifted passes of the ball so why not get the ball down and play? We've won 2 out of 3 games without conceding a single goal, so it's definitely working.

I quite like it tbf - it’s a refreshing change than just lumping it to the final third.

Better than the dinosaur football we had for 10 games under Pulis.

 

Though I dont think Dunkley is suited to it, rather Gibson plays if Hutchinson is out injured.

If you have three attackers breathing down your neck, playing a short one-two inside your own box just seems like a bad idea.

Makes a change for us actually keeping possession rather than lumping it to their centre halves. I’m all for it as long as Dunkley isn’t involved.

You could clearly see Dunkley wasn't as comfortable with it as Hutch. But give the lad time, it was his first game and if DM has faith in him so should we
