We lost out on £2m for Hirst. The only losers were Sheffield Wednesday.

When you have a chairman who makes poor decisions like that, is it any surprise we find ourselves in the situation we are in?

I don’t care what Hirst has gone on to do. At the time he had value and we fecked it up. Same with Clare and now possibly the same with Shaw.

We weren't the only losers.

He lost a year in the Belgian 2nd division - no way that was the ideal plan for his future. He now has a Pl contract but it could be argued he would have played more for us by now had he stayed rather than not be playing for Rotherham.

Nobody came out of it well.

There was another loser-George Hirst.

Smashing em in for the mighty  rotherham every week lol

As he could have been 3 years ago when with us.....but he was too good for that

I wonder how his career would have gone if he had the loan then, playing in men's football?

Anyway unless he starts to perform he can look forward to another loan in league 2 next season, before being released by Leicester

Indeed but for a player to effectively lose 18 months of his career at such a vital point in his development is going to be hard.

He needs to be at a team where he can play regular football when that happens he will develop into a very useful player.

Football is littered with good young players badly looked after by their clubs that do not fulfil their potential but equally they can come good later in their career. Vardy is the classic example, had the wrong attitude as a kid and got binned off, ended up in none league but started to apply himself and rose up through the league to be an England International playing in the premier league, the league top scorer on a few occasions and hold the record jointly for most consecutive games scoring in and on £100k a week. Not bad for a lad that was turning out for Stockbridge 10 years ago.

I see Hirst getting a loan or two to league one and playing regularly then starting to show what he can do, he could be mid 20's before we see the player we lost. As for Clare he was a good player at the time but missed his chance and signing for a Scottish team was the wrong move other than the top 2 or 3 teams the standard of football is not great, as can be seem with players in league 1 or 2 regularly making the step up to Scottish Premiership with ease.

He is just about to turn 22, probably on around 10k a week and in his first season at Championship level. Yet people are talking like he already failed to make himself career in football. There are some great players who started their first team careers slower then him.

Bet he's gutted when he's driving home from work in his big car to his nice plush pad, before jetting out on luxurious holidays and laughing at how much cash he's got in his bank account

I said this the other day. Lad is still 21. Plenty of years ahead of him. Just because it’s not falling for him at Rotherham doesn’t mean he won’t kick on.

Not saying he has failed.

The point raised was that Sheffield Wednesday were the only losers from the deal. George Hirst was destined for a move to Leicester anyway, they clearly wanted him. They could have taken it to tribunal and paid a fee that was likely to be less than the £2M they were said to have offered - nothing to them given were they are at.

Instead, they and the player and his representatives agreed a plan that saw him spend 1 year in the Belgian second division. That can't have been the optimal way of developing his career at the time, therefore he also lost out in some respects - he could have gone to Leicester anyway and had a much more productive year in terms of development with them or on loan somewhere in England rather than playing in a backwater league.
