Fletcher New Deal?

I think some people are being too harsh on his injury record here. In 17-18 he only managed 19 league games but he played 40 in his 16-17 and 18-19 and then 24/35 this year.

He's been our best player by a mile for the last 18 months. We've got to sign him up. 32 isn't past it for a striker these days if his game doesn't rely on pace.

Think he has been played 2/3 of the league games since he has been here, at over 30 that record is very unlikely to get any better.
I can see the argument both ways on offering him a new contract.

Is Fletcher expensive?

Here’s our current strikers over the last two seasons:-

  • Fletcher 4444 minutes - 24 goals - £3m wages
  • Forestieri 2131 minutes - 8 goals - £3m wages
  • Nuhiu 2715 minutes - 7 goals - £2m wages
  • Rhodes 499 minutes - 3 goals - £1m wages
  • Winnall 678 minutes - 1 goal - £1.5m wages
  • Wickham 399 minutes - 0 goals - £120k wages

Fletcher 4444 mins @ £675 per minute - 24 goals @ £125k per goal

Rest 6422 mins @ £1183 per minute - 19 goals @ £400k per goal

He’s great value compared to the rest put together.
He’s our best striker by light years.

We fall apart without him.

Of course we should give him a contract. I’m sure it won’t be at a reduced salary either.

(used these wages - SF 35k, FF35k, AN25k, JR35k, SW20k, CW30k - but if they are out it doesn’t affect the principle significantly)

As far as I'm aware Nuhiu is on around £13K. We were supposed to be paying £25K of Wickhams wages. (I accept that might have changed)

Winnall £15-17K.

Expect a 1 year deal will be offered to Fletcher, given our situation it makes sense, same for Fox.

Not sure if Monk rates FF but he is getting game time unlike the outcasts and maybe Monk sees him as his Jota like he had at Brum. Again if unable to spend it might look easier to chuck him another year.

The rest can all go.

Past performance does not guarantee future returns.

We put him on big wages previously because we didn’t have to pay a fee and he is now 32

As a club we need a sensible wage structure which all players fit within without exception.

Anybody can get injured and if it’s somebody on more money than anybody else it’s just more money down the drain.

So it depends how much  money he wants

Christ it's a tricky one this.

But, if we are serious about building a team for the future and attempting to be a more sustainable football club. We cannot be offering 32 year olds contracts.

He will have no resale value.

Let's put it this way, would Brentford or Bristol City sign him? Probably not.

He would demand at least what he is on now. 30k a week for 2 years minimum, he won't sign a 1 year contract.

We need to stop being so sentimental and start looking at this like a business.

Don't sign anybody over 30 should be a philosophy we adopt.

Otherwise we won't go anywhere.

Rumoured to be on between £30k- £35k a week

I know it’s a big wage but the £6m cost  over the 4 years he’s been here is great business when you compare it to the Rhodes, Abdi, Van Aken and Matias deals

As the saying goes..."If you can afford a David Jones, you can afford 5 Steven Fletchers"

I’d shake hands and walk away. We’ve fallen for this kind of thing before, and that’s why we are where we are. Fletcher has been a very good signing, but let’s quit whilst we are ahead.

Agree, we never seem to do the above.

That bloke up front with Charlton is the sort we want.

Offer a year with a chance to extend to two depending on appearances In first year

Our top scorer this season by far and thats even been missing for nearly a quarter of season

And people saying nuhiu should get a new contract :tango:he is useless

If we resign him we will never get promoted

He wouldn't play for another team in this league

Possibly Luton

Time to get rid and bring a striker he gets goals cus shock, that's their jobs

Perhaps they should. Maybe they wouldn't bottle the play off every season then having more than likely sold there re sale value player in January.

Talk of "reduced terms for another year," is simply not going to happen.

He's one of the best strikers in the division, and on a free transfer in the summer, will not be short of suitors...or very good contract offers.

If Wednesday are to keep him, they are going to have to be prepared to invest in him.

If we are only offering a one year deal, which for a 33 year old is probably wise, then they'll have to more or less match his current wage agreements.

The only way Fletcher will realistically take a pay cut, is if the club offer him more security, i.e. a longer a deal.

Whats more financially savvy? 1 year deal on £30-35k/week or a 2 year deal on £20k/week? I

n terms of FFP commitments, the latter may make more sense (less impact per financial year), but it's a risk paying a 34-35 year old that amount, given his previous injury record. But, Monk and the club, may deem his experience to be crucial over the next couple of years, especially if we're looking to freshen the squad up with younger players.

Think they is a general consensus that the squad has gone stale and by keeping the majority of players who are out of contract we kicking the can down the road another year.

Nuhiu getting another contract would be a step in the wrong direction.

Oh I see

I thought you mean't we could only afford to keep one

Totally agree Hoots but pretend your Fletcher, great form, scoring goals.....

Would you take a pay cut?

I fear will will lose him unless we at least match what ever he is on.

There will be a few who would take him, especially relegated clubs with parachute dosh.

Fletcher has the best hand.

That's a risk we will have to take

I'm guessing he won't be happy with just a one year deal, he'll be looking for 2 years

In all seriousness, we can't afford that, not unless he takes a massive cut

If we do give in to him, and he gets injured

Well we've been down this road too many times

I like Fletcher, but we could sign two or three premiership youngsters for the same money

It's a no brainer for me, pay cut or thanks for the memories
