Big club? Crowds now crowds then

Growing up in my day you always had the impression that we were a big club because we could match or even exceed the kind of crowds that most of the successful teams attracted. Man U and Liverpool were maybe 88801137-8169-4E2F-B8BF-7AF5B69CF7D5.thumb.jpeg.fbb6d5663a9d6dcbf951862dd994919f.jpegout on their own but Arsenal Spurs Chelsea etc were nothing special as the picture attached attests. Things have changed massively now with clubs like West Ham attracting 50k/week but it wasn’t always like that in an era when a fine club like Ipswich were attracting 11k. Makes me wonder what kind of crowds we’d get if we had a successful period now and got our pricing sorted out!

Our attendances were very mixed that season, highest 48,000 v Man Utd - lowest surprisingly 16,000 v Arsenal.

We would without a doubt average above 30k in the Premier league. We averaged above 27k 3 seasons ago.

The supporters are there, just wish people would stop having excuses not to go, we were 3rd before the match on Saturday and people couldn’t be arsed to go.

Well if the chairman would stop trying to charge over £39 then the pay on the gate crowd would more than likely reappear for games like that.

Plus you have ridiculous kick off times and sky tv showing us live every other week.

If I didn't have a season ticket I wouldn't have bothered going either, infact I wouldn't go at all for the prices he charges its outrageous.

Its not that people 'can't be arsed' they literally can't afford to, £39 is a stupid amount of money especially to those on lower incomes with kids.

This was the season post Heysel, post the Bradford fire

Hooliganism still an issue, poor stadiums and facilities

Football probably at its lowest ebb

Ironically no Sky and TV coverage was poor as a result

I do remember those days before the Premier league and do remember attendances used to really fall off last few weeks of the season if nothing much to play for.

Less then 6,500 though away at WBA!

By the time we reach the Premiership again SAG will make sure our attendances are under 20k

I was thinking this on Saturday when they announced the attendance against L@@ds.

Not sure we are going to see north of 30k in Hilsborough again.

We would average more than 30,000 if we were in Premier league now, would these 3 clubs average over 20,000 spending 20 years outside top flight football?

I doubt it very much.

This 100%.

Despite 20 years of abject poo, despite mismanagement, despite an ageing stadium, despite being 30 miles away from Champions League football every season, despite little promise that things are ever going to change. We are still getting 23,000 fans through the doors week in, week out. Outside Man U, Man C, Liverpool, Villa, Newcastle, Spurs, Arsenal I don't think any of the current Prem would manage this if they suffered what we have.

If we went up, stayed there and had the capacity I think we'd get 35,000 to 42,000 every week.

As mentioned, put any of the Prem clubs in the bottom half of the Championship, at home to Bristol City on a Tuesday night in November, on sky red button for the 5th year in a row, and every club in the country would be poorly supported.

Leeds & Us in this league would be the only ones to scrape an ok attendance.

All of the south coast Prem teams would be low.
Most of the mid table pack would also be poor (Wolves/Watford/Everton/Burnley, Leicester)
Man City without their millions would be closest to us, but not if Man Utd were a big club still.
Chelsea/Arsenal/Spurs/West Ham probably the same as us due to history.

TV and Prem money has made crowd figures so skewed.

From memory we gave Robert Maxwell a lot stick with our chants that day.

I've never aspired to the comments

"If we were in the premier league we'd easily average 30k"

Why? we haven't for over 50 years!

It's easier than ever to not go to a game and just watch it on a stream (legal or otherwise).

We even had people predicting a 30k plus crowd for the L**ds game if it was cheaper. It's just not going to happen.

some smaller clubs gates have doubled since the days we were in the prem...theres no reason ours should'nt rise in comparison....

Ive listed these before....

Wednesday are not an anomoly

Leicester...crowds doubled

Norwich crowds up 10'000

Southampton..crowds doubled

Newcastle United up 16'000

West Ham crowds doubled

Spurs plus 20'000

These are all since 2000 when we dipped

Others from the time that paper was printed are even more remarkable...

What earthly reason is there that Wednesday would not put a meagre 5k on the gate?

Looking at the fixtures against some of the well supported teams, there was either a larger or very similar attendance at Hillsborough.

Nothing to suggest that it couldnt be the same in the future

Football is a totally different beast today. At least in 1985 those people who went were real  football fans. I get the impression now that a lot are treating it as a "tourist" day out. How else do you explain West Ham (a similar sized club to us) getting over 50,000 crowds ?  They used to get similar crowds to us, they haven't won anything (I don't think) since 1980 and are never likely to (like us).

I'm not going to go over it again but our crowds are remarkable over the last 20 years and we would easily sell out in the PL even if the ground held 40,000. Our fans are at least as passionate as West Ham and leicester.

United managed it once and will probably this season. So yes, of course we would.
