Oppositions fans in the home end at Hillsborough

Recommended Posts

Oldham away last game of season 1991.  Think we couldve finished first if results had gone our way.  Got a ticket in home stand.  Hirst scored after about 5 minutes and all wednesday fans in home end went nuts and spilled onto the pitch.

Ended up losing 3-2 and went up third i think

Aston Villa ..maybe 1975?

They needed a win for promotion I think. Took the entire kop, took everything I think and beat us 4-0!

I was on there as a nipper and remember being surrounded by Villa fans , it wasn't hard to take mind you as we were getting crowds of about 7k back then and had already been relegated

Early 2000's, league Cup v the pigs. Small group in the South Stand Leppings Lane end.

One of them starts getting a bit noisy, Wednesdayite strolls up to him and one punch sends him two rows further forward.

Last he saw of the game.

Remember this one, few rows in front of me, was quite tasty!

It happened...Its gone...Its history....Its different.

I look back on those days with a certain fondness cos I lived through 'em...Same as owt else....

I know it was wrong...I don't need some woolly minded liberal to tell me it was wrong...Same as I don't need someone to tell me Women should be able to vote...or racism is f.ookin' ridiculous

Its simple stories, what happened when....Some fans on here went through it...These things happened...its history.

I mean some Owls fan posts....

"I remember when there was all that fightin' at wherever against whoever etc..and you get

"ooohh thinkk yer clever then?"

I'll tell you something...

You could not go to Stamford Bridge, Elland Rd, Ayresome park, Sunderland Villa Newcastle..secure in valours station thinkin'

"ahh this shouldn't happen cos its not summat that me morals allow"

It was devil take the hindmost and you were grateful that the some Owls fans joined in the melee while you f.ookin' legged it...

Take it as an historical record of what football was back then...Use it as a lesson that it should not be repeated..same as a f.ookin' world war or Ricketts....

Some of us went through it....simply cos you had to...simply cos thats what football was at the time we were watching it.

Todays fans don't understand it....and thats honestly fair enough...cos looking back..it was stupid, reckless...even senseless...nobody f.ookin' noticed at the time though...it was simply ...what happened

Really good summary asteener. It was a different time indeed and it was common place up and down the country. It barely got mentioned in the papers because it wasn't news.

Hard for younger ones to get it but was the way it was. No exaggerations.(probably why Belfast claims it was a lie about 3000 on the shore ham, but hardly a handful on the east bank. But it is totally true, hard as it may be to comprehend for you

The league cup game in the early 2000s, there was easily a hundred pig fans on the far end of the North stand. They appeared around kick off time as I remember. The Wednesday fans in that area moved away towards the middle of the stand and the pigs were penned in by police on the end block. Also 2 lads had a fight on the pitch infront of the kop while the game went on.

We played them in the league later that season and it kicked off again. Pigs were again in the end block on the north, but most of the trouble was in the south where a fair few took a bit of a kicking. I remember a full page of letters in the Star from people complaining about Wednesday fans attacking Blades in the south stand.

Yes. Shouldn't have been there. Don't believe in violence against other fans for no reason but if you're celebrating a goal in someone else's end you are taking the wee wee and deserve a slap.

I imagine they also did a thorough risk assessment to make sure that their punch wouldn't be the one to cause dramatic consequences? I imagine all the families that have lost love ones due to someone deserving a slap feel the same way. Why not just go to football and enjoy it and have a laugh with fellow supporters? What makes a football match so special that it's seemed acceptable to behave that way?

So you're saying cheering is good enough reason to be violent?

In the cup match a few years ago against arsenal there were a couple Arsenal fans sat behind me. Before game started they were talking openly about how they thought their team would win 4 or 5 nil.

I thought it was quite brazen/rude how open these opposition  fans were. Needless to say when our first and second goals went in I celebrated in their face.

They never came back for the second half.

All i want to say is what a great post,

nobody is condoning what happened, it was just simply the way of life for a football fan in that era

To many people today look to be offended and outraged when there is no need to be

I remember from the old 3rd Division days in the seventies, Millwall came on the kop before kick off in 1975 and were escorted off by the police to the lepp after loads of trouble. Portsmouth came on in 1976 and finished up right in the top corner about 30 of them, police just surrounded them for protection but there wasn't much trouble. Probably most bizarre was when Cambridge came on in their 1978 promotion season, around 50 of them in the Tango triangle corner, think it was easier for the police to put them there for protection rather than the lepp where there was always trouble with our fans mixing in with the away fans, that was if any away fans turned up in those days. Can only remember United in 79 and Bradford City in a night match in 78 bringing any numbers in the old third in them days on the lepp.

I’d be about 12.. I guess at the time I was thinking this is what Hillsborough looks like when it’s full. It was quite exciting at that age particularly as it was all doom and gloom week in week out. I think it kind of makes me value the good times since much more than those that didn’t experience the (real) dark days

That about 15 years ago - when they got pipped by WBA that day anyway!

I remember we beat Boro 1-0 thanks to a late penalty a few years back. It became apparent one elderly bloke was a Boro supporter. Not a problem, just struck me as a little odd as the away end was not sold out.

Probs does it for sexual thrill

Went to watch Leeds Vs Millwall a few years ago, at half time in the bar and the scores came on the TV, we were losing, without thinking in a raised voice i moaned. Had a bunch of knuckle draggers all slowly turn round 'are you wednesday?'

'Yes, yes i am, but i hate Millwall so....'

Even my mates slowly moved away from me, thought i was going to get a beating then, but managed to avoid it somehow.

The risk assessment should be carried out by the person who decides to break the law and sit in the home end. The bigger the match, the bigger the rivalry, the bigger the risk. Football isn't a special case. If you openly take the wee wee out of someone with opposing views to you there is a risk of violence in any walk of life. If you are prepared to behave in a certain way you have to accept the consequences.
