Hirst scored after about 5 minutes and all wednesday fans in home end went nuts and spilled onto the pitch. They appeared around kick off time as I remember. The Wednesday fans in that area moved away towards the middle of the stand and the pigs were penned in by police on the end block. Also 2 lads had a fight on the pitch infront of the kop while the game went on. We played them in the league later that season and it kicked off again. Pigs were again in the end block on the north, but most of the trouble was in the south where a fair few took a bit of a kicking. I remember a full page of letters in the Star from people complaining about Wednesday fans attacking Blades in the south stand. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Before game started they were talking openly about how they thought their team would win 4 or 5 nil. I thought it was quite brazen/rude how open these opposition fans were. owlthorpe Posted January 25, 2019 Share Posted January 25, 2019 I remember from the old 3rd Division days in the seventies, Millwall came on the kop before kick off in 1975 and were escorted off by the police to the lepp after loads of trouble. Portsmouth came on in 1976 and finished up right in the top corner about 30 of them, police just surrounded them for protection but there wasn't much trouble. Probably most bizarre was when Cambridge came on in their 1978 promotion season, around 50 of them in the Tango triangle corner, think it was easier for the police to put them there for protection rather than the lepp where there was always trouble with our fans mixing in with the away fans, that was if any away fans turned up in those days. I guess at the time I was thinking this is what Hillsborough looks like when it’s full. It was quite exciting at that age particularly as it was all doom and gloom week in week out. Had a bunch of knuckle draggers all slowly turn round 'are you wednesday?' 'Yes, yes i am, but i hate Millwall so....' The risk assessment should be carried out by the person who decides to break the law and sit in the home end. The bigger the match, the bigger the rivalry, the bigger the risk. Football isn't a special case. If you openly take the wee wee out of someone with opposing views to you there is a risk of violence in any walk of life.
