Oppositions fans in the home end at Hillsborough

I remember sitting just behind a family of Spurs fans in the game when Klinsmann scored against us.  I was only young and didn't really appreciate the size of his cojones for cheering so openly for Spurs whilst sitting on the Kop.

A few seasons later we played Chelsea at home and a few Chelsea fans were in with our fans.  One of them was off his face and kicking the chair in front of him and generally going a bit mental.  The stewards seemed a bit afraid of him.

I've never seen an away fan get attacked for being in the home end, but I do remember seeing that Sunderland fan receive a right hook when he was giving it large to the North stand.  Not very mature, but funny anyway.

Yes I remember the Sunderland fan too , why on Earth was he allowed to walk round the pitch like that , I will not deny when he got flattened I wasn’t upset for him !!!

All the Sunderland fans I encountered that day were tails.  Can't stand their fans because of that day.

Bet if this was on Blunt Forums they would have kicked us to f**k and taken the EB, never seen us before and after the game. The game I quoted was 1970/1 when they took most of the ground as they were top of the old Div 2, They still talk about us never turning up in the town centre whenever there's a derby game and only managing to get to games through underground tunnels. Still that's the Blunt propaganda.

A few in the top corner on the Kop on an Easter bank holiday doesn't mean taking the ground....they threw some eggs and still claim it like they were throwing grenades lol

You're either a pig or wasn't there

There were 2 Wigan fans in North stand other week, father and young son.

My mate who's a Derby fan comes on north with us when we play Derby too.

Which is how it should be.

Those of us involved in the darker days of football dont look back at those days with much pride at all,the racism the violence were all part of a saturday afternoon back then.

But I recall my Dad telling me of how the fans used to stand together at games back in the 40s and 50s,and to some degree thats returned. There will always be idiots, football has always had a tribal feel to it,and out and out home ends are still no go areas, but the rest of the seated areas it seems more accepted today and thats pleasing.Id hate the game to drag back to the days of my youth, fences and pens were the worst idea for crowd control, but the cheapest solution the authorities could come up with,as many of said at the time "people would die as a result" and sadly we were all proved right........

My Derby mates have been on the kop with us and my Forest/ Spurs/ Leeds and Chelsea mates as well. The Derby Lads were throwing snowballs at Pat Jennings with us...they still laugh about it

They were eventually taken onto the leps where it kicked off again, there used to be quite a number of wednesday boys would go on the leps to have a pop at the unsuspecting away fans.

Remember same happening with a crew of Grimsby fans who had a pop on the kop but got a good slap for trying.

Same period remember Pompey having a fair few on the middle of the kop, they were more stubborn though as I recall, can’t remember if they scarpered or not.

They would come on kop real early when hardly anyone was in the ground to find when numbers grew towards kick off they had bitten off more than they can chew.

I was in my early teens at the time, the whole experience home and away was both frightening and exhilarating at the same time.

When I was around 12 the family went to York City away... we somehow ended up in their end...

Their fans were great - but the police decided that we should be escorted to the proper side of the stadium...  we got quite the cheer as we walked along the pitch side..

As for MLS - the clubs have to keep a set number of seats (sections) for visiting fans... of course you don't get many NYC or Orlando fans flying to Vancouver so we generally have the small groups of visiting fans in and around us.

We have met some great away supporters both at home games in Vancouver and as we travel (usually Portland and Seattle but we try to visit another city each season - Dallas last year)...  Fortunately their is no real hooligan factor over here and the reserved areas are generally only used for large groups of visiting fans...

Out of interest, is there ever segregation for games with more travelling fans? Say when Vancouver play Seattle or the two LA teams play each other.

We obviously have different views which is probably down to my age and what I've experienced. I drink in pubs before matches and chat to opposing fans on occasions and that's how it should be. However, it's still at the back of my mind that the same fans in a couple if hours will be telling me 'Sheffield's a shithole' and generally hurling abuse in my direction. That's part of the game and i accept it but at the same time I think that certain things are out of order and sitting in the wrong end is one of them. You don't get the same abuse or tribalism in Rugby and the game is I'm sure all the better for it but as I said earlier, football's different. If I'm in a minority I think it will be a sizeable one, particularly for fans aged 50 plus, frommost/all English clubs.

Fair dos mate well said I just think something can be done to make football more like that etc but your opinion makes perfect sense

All opposing fans come in the Barracks apart from blades and Leeds. Even Millwall have been in recent seasons.

If you took the tribalism out of football then it would lose a lot of its appeal.  Fans want to sing and chant about their club.

I've brought fans of Derby, Arsenal, Forest, Bristol, Blackburn, Bolton, Newcastle, Chelsea, Swansea, Cardiff and Northwich Victoria to Hillsborough without issue. Both when their team's have been playing and not. And likewise been to their's when we've played and when we haven't.

There has been one occasion where some fella behind us got 'bothered' we had a red dog with us. And once when I was with the Cardiff away fan's at Derby, some fans asked if I was a Derby fan, I mean really, the scrubbers. Neither occasion turned into any fuss, and I generally think if you are with fans of the club you should be fine. Generally you have to try and obey the universal rule 'don't be a wee pipe' and hope you don't come across anyone who can't not be, then I think you'll be fine.

Never sure why any bunch of away fan's would sit in the home end given the choice? But having spent 20+ year's an a&e nurse picking up the aftermath of knobheads scrapping I really think anyone that wants to batter someone over football is just scum.

You've got a poor memory mate.  They had the Upper LH of the Kop.  That is all.

Singing and chanting is brilliant... punching someone because they've got a different colour scarf on is another matter.... I suppose I'm referencing the poor Norwich fans at the lane.

My point is that fans of one club want to congregate together to chant for their club and having fans of the other side amongst them wouldn't help.

I totally agree.

I was handbag holder when it was going off....it certainly was different times.

I also remember watching football focus or grandstand one afternoon well before kickoff and a load of West ham came in the pub and it was a brilliant atmosphere.....we basically had the same gripes and outlook.... but..of course... I was called a cant.
