scilly owl
If you were playing up front for Wigan would he have intimidated you ? It must have been like being marked by Julian Clary. 1

I’m not fussed if he can ping a 50 yard ball out to the wing back every so often. I could do that under no pressure. Hasnt even managed that since his first couple of games. One of the biggest myths going in his ability on the ball

Discuss. I'm sure someone will have already said it, but once again our recruitment shambles rears its ugly and not too bright head. In short we look at 200+ cb all over the world.... Hmmm prime requisites for a cb.. Positioning. Awereness. Good in the air. Marks opponents diligently. Is good at tackling.... Right let's sign one that DOES NONE OF THESE THINGS... ooh but he does ping a beautiful crossfield ball. Lol
0114
More importantly Lees need to be the central defender out of the back 3. JVA worries me to death! Fingers crossed a couple sales this week and we can hopefully get a centre half on loan
mcmigo
I have seen very little Dutch football and knew nothing of van aken before he signed. i can only assume he was being partnered by a great defender and the overall pace of the game was slower, or his team played a deep defensive line, or all of those things. Not one of our defenders has any pace ,and every one of them get murdered when someone runs at them . Westwood Pudil and Lees were the mainstays of a defence that kept clean sheets for fun, under a manager who didn’t know how to defend. Where are we now? Kopparberg
Van Aken is getting the brunt of it today (maybe it is fair) However, it up to the whole team not to concede 3 goals. We’re we organised at all today? Did we win our battles? We’ll never pick up points like that. First game of the season I just wanted to see the basics being done right, a bore draw even but we somehow get this shambolic display.
bobbobbins
The worst performance I've seen from him today. I think Palmer just pipped him though for most out of their depth player. Edited August 4, 2018 by bobbobbins
Guest ka58
The defending by the whole team was pathetic really - their goals come from clearances where no one can be arsed to make the second ball. unorganised mess.

Shouldnt have played again after the pigs game at home when he got thoroughly dry bummed Carlos destroyed this lads confidence at the game you mentioned. He had Reach and that’s all to help defend the left flank .... Wilder must have thought all his dreams had come true ... to see such defensive weakness. VH needed a good solid defensive left back with him ... the fantastic confidence of long and accurate passes and coming out of the defence Alan Hansonesque in his first couple of games, was ruined by that idiot in one match. The lad must have wondered wtf he had let himself in to. This is the moment I thought CC was totally incompetent .. and putting these two together was the main reason the blades hammered us. Weve got over CC and the result that day ... but this lad hasn’t.

Gresh
A liability today. He can play, but is too prone to ball watching and needs to toughen up.
jamiejohn
I had such high hopes for this lad because whatever anyone says he can play football, the fact he can’t defend seems to have taken away his passing ability as well. Change of position maybe? The lad can play with me ball but not without it
Holmowl
Said last season, he is not very good. Looked just as poor yesterday, though it was his first proper game for six months so let’s not jump to conclusions. I never agreed with most of you that his distribution was great. He hit a couple of very good long passes and a lot of very bad ones. Our CBs need to find Bannan, Reach or our RWB when we find one, and then sit back ready to defend. He is not quick, and doesn’t think quickly either. Hence his regular and schoolboy-like desperate rescue lunges. Yet another clear yellow yesterday, and a season of JVA will be littered with dangerous free-kicks and penalties. I hold my breath when he is tackling in the box. He is a red-card waiting to happen. That sort of tackling went out of the game 15 years ago. Alongside Lees in a four would be least damaging, and he might just turn into a dependable CB if he can improve quite a lot. Left side of a three would worry me, but nowhere near as much as central in a three...We will concede at record levels if he is our regular central CB. Makes me shudder.
