It would be baffling if he went to Benfica. I don't like the fact that Portuguese, Dutch, French, and central/east European clubs are priced out of top level European football, unless they can get financially wired up by a Russian or an Arab plutocrat. But that's the case.

A season loan there is a different matter - could imagine that happening.

Lucky lad if so. Tremendous city to live in.

We will soon know if Hunt rumour is correct and if so will give credibility to Hirst story.

If Hirst does go to Benfica I think it will show someone has made a Horlicks of managing him and his career. The Agents have close links with Benfica and I suppose is a last resort destination for them. Most English clubs would pay considerably more wages than Benfica do especially for young unproven players (I would think their Academy players or on less than Wednesday's). It is probably only the signing on fee which would make it financially worthwhile for him to join Benfica as no transfer fee payable This indicates his agents have put too high a price on his servicesand have concentrated too much on financial gain rather than in his development as a player..The lost year will have not been worth the stand off and could have seriously damaged his career.

Couldn't give a poo where he goes, if the club lose out on a fee for him by some loophole to a non English club, will be disappointed. But I'm not convinced by the hype which has more to do with his surname IMO and suspect he may be in the lower leagues when his next contract expires.

I'll be pleased in a few weeks when this is resolved.

Wouldn't blame him for going abroad. Quite a few are starting to do it now. English clubs don't play English players. The Premier League is dominated by foreign owners, foreign players and foreign managers, and controlled by foreign money and TV rights.

Its a foreign League, and one of the major reasons why probably Tunisia will knock us out of the World Cup.

Hirst will get better coaching, play in a better environment, get first team football quicker and probably a better deal. No brainier, rather than sitting in Everton's under 23 team, before he gets loaned to Fleetwood.

We're a funny lot aren't we.

I know we'd all like him signed up. It would have been a nice story. Father and son both goal heros at the same club.

But it's clearly not going to happen.

That being the case we have to let it go.

But there's always that nihilisitc sense that if we can't have the best scenario.....

We then start thinking it has to be the worsr scenario. W

Where Hirst goes to Benfica. Then gets loaned to Swansea next season as they look to be promoted after Southampton stun everyone with a last day win over Man City.

Fixture computer sends them to Hillsborough for the first match of the season where he makes his league debut and scores a second half hat-trick at the KOP end.
