Medical Department Sacked

This type of thread really sums up football fans.

For a start, we're not talking about guys who just kick a ball around a field here's. We're talking highly educated, highly experienced and probably not very highly paid staff. It staggers me how people are so wasteful with other people's jobs (and thus life) just cos they are attached to a football....these are not multi millionaires who will just find another job.

Then there's the "somethings up, gotta be, people are always injuries and take ages to come back". Do they? What is your medical opinion on that specific injury for that particular time.

"They looked unfit Vs Huddersfield". Great, by what measure are you assessing that? Oh yeah, Huddersfield "looked" fitter.....

Good work

Well said

My old memory might be playing tricks on me but didn't Alan Smith, our current Physio's father leave Hillsborough after disagreements with Trevor Francis concerning players recovery from injury, specifically Trevor Francis saying they were fit to play but Alan Smith said they weren't.

I thought Smith left to join up with the England party but you may be right.    Back then I was young and naive and really just took notice of what was on the pitch and in the Green 'un.

I do know we've not been blessed with a good injury record since i've been watching, and that's since 1991.    That first season I watched, the promotion season and cup win we seemed to have a constant almost first 11.   Never since.

Weren't Hirst and Pearson constantly picking up injuries?

You can work on fitness with a football. It's not all greno woods! I know a current prem footballer who doesn't do much fitness work, hates gyms

Maybe so but we did look leggy in a lot of games last season so I think it's a fair shout to question our pre season strategy especially with the amount of injuries we have suffered

To be fair I think Pearson did have a couple of broken legs....i'm sure he broke his leg more than once, well it could have been alternate legs for all I know.

Pearson was allowed to play on at Blackburn (league cup semi) with a double leg fracture

Hirst had a myriad of injuries but they were different times with different methods available and no blame can be attached to what was likely a highly overstretched medical department - probably 1 physio...

OK your opinions have been noted. In light of this your job offer has been withdrawn and we've found a more willing candidate. We were hoping you could both work together as a team but we accept your decision. Close the door on your way out.

Yeah you are right chap...wasn't it arguements about cortizone injections??.... Francis wanted players to have them so they could play and Smith wanted them to heal more naturally and not be rushed back !!!

This is often the problem

A management team wanting results vs a medical team striving to do their best (and the right thing) for the players

But too many people have zero knowledge of the myriad factors involved in injury - but will spout off anyway like they have a clue...

Good work

if the club is spending money on outside medical staff/treatment because of concerns over the current staff....  Well, why wouldn't you clean house?

I'd love to know the inner workings of our club.

The inner workings will be like any other business - you are brought in to improve your area and hit your targets, and if you don't, goodbye. It's really that simple.

How long has the staff been in place?

Dunno about all the staff but Paul Smith has been there at least 4 years

Pretty sure he was head of medical services (as its now known...)

*might still be there for all i know - just responding to the thread but no confirmation that i have seen

That rings a bell mate.

While having no medical knowledge whatsoever I've never been comfortable with the use of cortozone injections. Masking the pain of an injury to play at the risk of making the injury worse & losing the player for much longer or even threatening a players long term career.

All the players Carlos kept saying 'he'll be back in full training in 2 weeks' then every 2 weeks 'he had a setback in training so maybe another 2 weeks'. He must've been badly advised by his medical staff. Hooper, abdi, matias, lees I think had a spell, fletcher missed 6 week to a couple month and Buckley would come back for 1 game then miss the next 4. But all were only supposed to have had slight knocks.

Buckley dislocated his shoulder, if I recall, so it could be argued this was more than a knock.

The noise coming out of the club was that FF and Hooper both sought outside assistance/advice, but not sure about the rest.

So no prem player, for example, has ever "gone to America/Germany" to see a specialist?
