The age old argument. ...Hirst v Deane

Recommended Posts

As a forward Warhurst only played there for about half a season and was very injury prone after he left us.

Yes would put Deane ahead of Warhurst. Think Deane was a good player.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Steel City Semi in 1993 when Deane had a very quiet game.

Maybe for only half a season but for that half he was the best in the league the same can't be said of Deane during any spell in his career

Hirst was a far superior players.

Though that is hardly surprising as Hirst was superior to every other striker in the League at that time.

Deane was a good player though. Terrific in the air and very good at working the channels.

U suspect he might have made a decent partner for the special one.

This.

Deane was probably better in the air and was possibly a better team player but every other facet of being a centre forward Hirsty wins comfortably.

Prior to Cantona joining United (the proper one) Steve Bruce was told by Bryan Robson that the gaffer (Fergie) was signing one of the top three forwards in the country either Cantona (who it turned out to be), Shearer or Hirst.

Two completely different players IMO, bit like comparing Owen and Crouch....

Hirsty was a natural finisher in the mould of Shearer, Fowler, Owen but that was it. Deane on the other hand had more to his all-round game and would often drop deep to collect the ball, run the channels etc.

If you compare their records playing for both teams, Deane's is slightly better;

Deane - 94 goals in 224 appearances, 2.38 games per goal

Hirst - 106 goals in 294 appearances, 2.77 games per goal

A more interesting comparison would be assists.....

If you ask me Hirst was the better striker but Deane was the better attacking player.

Sorry, but that's nonsense. You really need to watch the video compilation on YouTube of Hirst's goals. There was way more to his game than just finishing.

I actually have a lot of respect for Deane (and we tried to but him at least once), but outside of your supporters, surely Hirst would get 9 out of every 10 votes cast in any such debate? Legends like Alex Ferguson and Bobby Robson clearly thought he was the best English striker available at one point. Even Deane's mum wouldn't say that about him.

As for their respective scoring records, I'd say there's some context to that. Firstly, Hirst's injury laden later years aren't taken into account and secondly he played all but one of his seasons in the top flight, whereas Deane had several against lower league opponents. It may have only been for four seasons, but when he was at his peak, Hirst was the best in the country.
