This, Marwood was an excellent signing, never afraid to take his man on and created so many goals for Chapman, etc. Whilst I didn't agree with this view, I had a Man Utd mate who reckoned he was better than Coppell.....which probably explains why he ended up going to Arsenal for what was big money at the time

I’d love to know how much £700,000 would be  in today’s Transfer Market now.🤔

Good shout.

His scoring record in Scotland was phenomenal, but he just looked a notch below what was required in the Championship, didn't he?

He wasn't quick enough to get away from defenders, nor strong enough to hold them off for long...and I don't think I've ever seen a striker with a weaker shot.

He did some decent things, but it was all a bit 'meh', really, wasn't it?

This just about sums him up - decent movement and technique, then a pea-roller of a shot which isn't even on target...

Loved his goal

at brum. Sadly my lasting memory is of him missing three one on ones v wolves at home then that prize bellchop clarke bagging a late winner for them

Don't know if I'm remembering wrong, but Gary Hooper when we first had him on loan.

Just coming back from injury, emergency loan signing. Didn't fill me with much optimism.

He then went on to become irreplaceable for us.

A mention for Sam Winnall too. Highly rated at Barnsley and looked like a shrewd signing by us. For whatever reason he never lived up to the hype.

Bannan definitely. The stories of him drinking were pretty well known and he was thought of as someone who had wasted his talent.

On a lesser scale, Craig Rocastle. I thought he was utter dogshit when he first came but made himself an important part of the Sturrock promotion team.

Craig rocastle had one good game luckily it was the right one. He was immense in the playoff final.

if it wasn’t for that performance I would struggle to remember him.

Another one here to throw in to the ring.Brian Marwood. Signed from Hull in 1984 for £100,000. Was expecting us to sign big name players for the 1984/85 season.Still he did a pretty good job for us in that season.Eventually, he moved to Arsenal for £700,000.

Quick story about Brian who lived on Farlow Croft at High Green. He told me that for the first few weeks after signing for us he used to go home after training and cry because he thought he wasn't ever going to be good enough and had made the biggest mistake of his life. Said that after about 6 weeks things just suddenly started to click and fall into place. As good a crosser of a football Ive seen.

Trevor Francis and Chris Waddle thought they were both to old and looking for last hurrah, both turned out to be a real pleasure to watch.

TF could put the ball on a sixpence and CW played the same trick every time and every one fell for it including the fans.

What was the trick, unfortunately too young to remember Waddle playing.

That’s a great story tbh because it does show that Brian Marwood was determined to knuckle down and put the effort in. Compare that to someone like Jay Boothroyd who was a complete waste of space.

He's also doing amazingly well for himself in his current career. Clearly a very bright bloke.

He is  very bright and articulate. When he retired he worked for Nike , PFA , and now senior position at Man City. My son had a drink with him last time we played em at their place and lost 7 -0 I think it was.
