Clare and Hirst both promised as much as Shaw but their careers seem to have stalled some what. Pay him to much and if he turns out to be average or poor the club gets hammered. Pay him something along the lines of the other deadbeats we've spunked money on ... or we could just carry on paying Erby and his like fortunes. It's not the point that Clare or Hirst failed to deliver on their early promise. It's that like Shaw, we let players go for peanuts rather than tie them down to reasonable contracts. Let some other club discover if they're the real deal or not, but at least make them pay well for the privilege of finding out.

My guess is when an agent has a youngster who shows real promise then they run the contract down so they can maximise the offers from other clubs. Guest wilyfox
He’s questioned Shaw’s agent and now pointed the finger at Celtic. Chansiri should look closer to home. It’s embarrassing.

Other clubs seem to manage it - including one very successfully in the same city as us.

modboy
post brexit UK players with potential will be at a premium. Do these type of compensation deals have sell on clauses?
Animis
It's odd that DC views the likes of Shaw as being kids, with a lessor value of say BB, yet the manager is viewing them as equals. Maybe it's a cultural thing.
swfcGibbo
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jadon_Sancho Sancho moved to Man City for an initial fee of £66,000. Watford had developed him for years. It happens to other clubs and it will happen to us again. We should have tied him down to some sort of contract in the Summer but it would be naïve to say this doesn't happen elsewhere.
