THE EFL HEARING THREAD

What happens on the pitch should stay on the pitch, Points won and lost. Anything else destroys the integrity of the game.

Trying to deploy a system regarding financial integrity has too many factors in play makes it almost impossible. Small Towns, Big Cities; The pull of London for International players seems wholly unfair. The (Broke) Glaziers being able to borrow vast amount of money to buy Man U using negative equity in US as security; What was that about ?

How can the governors of the game manage to keep a straight face while they compromise the  financial integrity of the game while huge parachute payments compromise the integrity of the championship on every level.

The Premier league chief last week in front of the commons select committee.

Question - So how much funding have you supplied to the EFL to help them through the issues, all 71 clubs are having with lose of income because of Co-Vid

Answer - 'nothing the EFL have not asked for anything or additional help'

Question - But you do provide funding to the EFL

Answer 'Yes last season £400m was given in funding to the EFL'

Question - What was the split of that and to how many clubs

Answer - £260m of it is parachute payments to 9 clubs the other £140m is split between the remaining 62 clubs.

Yet some in authority will argue that parachute payments are not a major factor in financial disparities or the level of competition.

So less than 2.5m each to 62 clubs IF it was shared equally, and around 29m each to the other 9 clubs last season.

What a joke.

I bet without them the 3 teams coming down each season would break the £39m spending limit in 1 season.

You only have to look at the losses made by Villa and Newcasle the season they were in the championship to see that parachutes are basically a bonus to help the ex premier league teams become current premier league teams again.

As I've mentioned loads on here - if parachute payments were used for what they are actually meant for (restructuring off field operations to reflect reduced income as a result of relegation) then there wouldn't be an issue. However the ineffectual governance by both the EFL and PL allow these payments to be spent on the playing side - which as you say results in a major financial disparity in the competition.

Just to clarify my point re Wigan / EFL. Obviously due diligence isn’t down to Dave whelan but I used that example given how much he loves the club etc. He would never have sold to them had he had any idea of what would happen. It wouldn’t be a point for most club sales though. Re the EFL they can do all the due diligence they want but so many things re owners just aren’t predictable. They can find that the owner has all the funds etc required but they can’t predict what happens in practice. No one could have possibly predicted re this potential bet for Wigan to be relegated

They should distribute money by giving the bottom team most money upwards leading to the top team getting least money

Bit like the NFL draft system.

Would teams purposely finish bottom knowing they would get a wad of cash though?

You can’t criticise the press man!!!!

He was a great servant for us but towards the end his lack of mobility was a problem as he couldn't get down quickly enough to shots that were close to him.
