Megson Football

Some of the football under Monk has been shocking. Such dull negative tactics. If we where winning games you can kind of except it but our record since Christmas has been embarrassing.

It's the inconsistency of it all, 4-1 a to Middlesbro, 4-0 away to Forrest, 2-0 away to Leeds + wins at Brighton and QPR (who were scoring for fun at the time).

Then turn out dog turd like Blackburn, but that has been the way with theses players for the last 4 seasons, so it is nowt  new.

Looking at the quality, type of players Monk has fetched in, he wants to build a TEAM of players who just do their job, as against a group of players who only play when it suits them.

You're right, it was his team but their eventual success certainly wasn't down to him. In the ten games before he was finally sacked we won three and lost five (won 4, lost 4 if just going on league games). In the ten games after he was sacked we won seven and lost none. Megson did not get us promoted.

There isnt even a worthy debate about who was the better manager if you look at the relevant records of the pair.  Megson wins by huge margin.  Jones was a serial looser end of.

I hope you’re right, though I would never suggest that Windass was such a player Guess different managers bring different things out of different players, so hopefully Monk can get Windass’s career back on track

Given that we were discussing who got Wednesday promoted, the relevant records are as follows:

Megson promotions with Wednesday: 0

Jones promotions with Wednesday: 1

And since you can only fairly compare records when they're managing at the same level (i.e. League One), the relevant stats are:

Megson: W24 D11 L18 (45% win)

Jones: W10 D3 L0 (77% win)

If you also count the days when the league was the second division, you could include Dave Jones' record at Stockport County. Think they were second in the 97 season, getting to the semi final of the league cup from memory.

Plus Gary Megsons' record at Nottingham Forest and I think Blackpool from memory as well?

Lots of similarities to when Megson first came in compared to Monk. During that 10/11 season Megson similar to Monk had some terrible results at Hillsborough, wasn’t happy at all with the playing squad, even froze certain players out.

Was allowed to do something Monk hasn’t yet and that was pretty much transform the playing squad, ruthlessly got rid of players like Spurr who was a fan favourite and even Tommy Miller who had scored 9 goals and been captain for Megson. Even scrapped Michael Morrison who we had paid a decent amount of money for.

He was absolutely ruthless that summer and was allowed to replace players that suited what he wanted. Signed people who wanted to be at our club, didn’t sign people off reputation.

Monk needs to be allowed to do that same and I’m fully behind that. Wether Chansiri is may be a different matter.

So what are you saying, because we know how it all ended for Megson, let’s not make the same mistake?

Megson football was better than this.

Nothing wrong with direct football if you do it properly.

We play aimless football.

Absolutly this.

Also before we start to slag Megson off lets not forget we was in 3rd place when he got sacked and I do believe Antonio was the player that made a massive impact on our on our whole team and season to a degree.

Just a shame that he couldn't get his squad to play football for him. Jones showed him how though.

It was at a time when Megson had some key players injured and we desperatly needed someone coming in ...he got Antonio and the first game we beat the pigs after that we will never know will we.

You might not know, but I do.

Dave Jones inherited a half decent side that was just getting some injured players back and had just got Antonio.

His true colours came out in the division above.

Ill still say Megson was a much better manager then him anyday.

No surprise that you mention 5 terrific performances and 5 away games.

Its our home style that lacks a plan.
