Don't know if it started at Hillsborough or the Lane but it stayed with him until he retired. Always wore a tie, must have been at least 25 stone. dumboldowl Posted September 2, 2019 Share Posted September 2, 2019 On Saturday I attempted to leave the ground early (4.45) to try and beat the crush out of the North Stand. Despite us being informed that Penistone Road would be completely closed from 4.30, it was still open, but the most stupidly annoying thing was the fact that the new yellow coated shock troops (masquerading as stewards) wouldn't open the gates to let us out, and instead were shuffling us through a side gate into the parking area adjacent to the club shop. Exactly what the point of this latest intrusion into our lives was meant to achieve I'm not sure, but it was certainly causing further unnecessary delay to the process, and angry comments from the crowd behind. Visiting Hillsborough on match days is becoming a less enjoyable experience with every game that passes. Not just because of the performances on the field. Certainly the turnstiles seem overmanned, BUT we must remember there are cretins who will try to take smoke bombs etc as well as people who are intent on 'terrorist; type activities. Security has been tightened everywhere, and not just for our safety Many stewards, however, do let a little power go to their heads, and don't forget they are ordinary folk like you and me. There is a second opinion about some stewards, so don't tar all with the same brush. Take my own case, and please hear me out! I am a 79 y-o, just starting my 73rd season I walk with 2 sticks and difficulty.I love to sit in my own seat, Row Z, between aisles 8 & 9 To reach this seat, I have to walk from Penistone Road to Gate J, from where I have to negotiate 2 flights of steps, 28 steps in total,before arriving on the South concourse. I then have a further 9 steps to get to the passage that runs between Row Z and Row AA. On Saturday, I approached the temporary ticket office, and stayed for a blow. I was immediately approached by 2 stewards, who asked if i wanted assistance. I was escorted to a lift, taken up into the Club Foyer, gave my details to a very kind gentleman, who gave me the contact details for a lift pass, then escorted me directly ontto the concourse. 'Come out this way and we will arrange for you to exit' I was told. On climbing the short way from the concourse to the stand, the steward there, helped me to my seat without my asking. On exit, I was met by the same Gentleman who took me out into the club foyer, where I was told not only would the club contact me, but that I could enter the same way next match,, and that I could even bring a Carer with me. I have found that most of the SWFC stewards , if properly approached, are very helpful. Often one gets what one deserves. Good to hear about the positive side of rewarding, soulds like they must have been thr swfc stewards at a guess. Hope it made your matchday experience easier (except the actual game). Musn't Grumble Posted September 2, 2019 Share Posted September 2, 2019 At Wigan... THAT FA Cup match in 1977... When it was almost mandatory to be sexist... There were two turnstiles open for visiting fans with a male police officer at the turnstile checking one queue and a rather nice female police officer frisking everyone in her queue for the second turnstile. Wednesday fans got quite excited by this prospect and, once they had got to the front of the queue and been frisked by the female police officer, they then ran to the join the back of the queue to get frisked again, and so on. Eventually, there was no one queuing at the turnstile manned by the male police officer but the other queue was miles long. It ended up with the male police officer grabbing fans from the other queue and throwing them IN to the ground.
