Play offs - yes or no?

I think the pain only started to ease when we dumped them out of the all important Zenith Data Systems cup!

Would have slightly eased the pain, had it been after our relegation and their promotion. With it being prior to both these things, it didn't ease my pain.

Would you prefer to keep them or revert back to promoting top 3? Can see arguments on both sides. Unfair to team finishing 3rd, particularly if way ahead and that was how we were promoted back in 91. Last season, because of their situation, Brighton fans came up with idea of 3rd team going straight through to final and 4th and 5th playing off. Argument for is it keeps season going. Can see that but surely competition for top 3 would be greater if no play offs. Up to last day of season any one of 3 teams could have finished 3rd this time. Would stop teams fielding weakened sides when already through to play offs.

Probably still bitter because we've failed twice now. Not sure about next season. Don't know if I could take another play off campaign although I suppose I'd rather that than nothing. Just hope we get automatic.

Hypothetical argument I know because I doubt anything will change.

With Brighton idea four teams are promoted and still have the same issue with 4th and 5th so that's pretty pants.

Lots of grumbles about amount of games played so could go with top 3 and extend the season to spread the mid week matches...

There's a real caginess about a lot of the playoff finals because there's so much at stake and the teams have already played each other twice in the season that they know each other so well.

I'd basically say top three and bottom three go up and down then fourth bottom and fourth top play each other. That way this season we'd play at Wembley whoever finished fourth bottom in the PL. winner either gets promoted or regains their status.

I'd change the format to be a combination of both

Promote and relegate the top/bottom 3 teams, with a 4 team play off grouping of the teams that finish in 16/17 in Premier league, and the team that finishes 4/5 in the Championship.

So for example, this season:

Hull, Midllesborough and Sunderland would have been relegated. And newcastle, Brighton & Reading promoted

Then, Burnley & Watford would play off against us and Huddersfield for another place in the Premier League

I would prefer reformatting the play-offs such that the further up the league you finish, the easier the path to promotion. For example, 5th and 6th play each other with 5th having home advantage on virtue of finishing higher, the winner of that tie then plays the 4th placed team who have home advantage, then the winner of that tie plays the team who finished 3rd at Wembley (thus finishing third would have a major advantage and the format would reduce the chances of clubs putting out weakened teams when in the play-off places).

Next question. I know we'll never sign him, but if we signed Ronaldo, should we play him central or wide right ?

CC would stick him on the left wing.

He'd be out injured all season.

So the team who finish 3rd would not have to play so many matches and therefore have a deserved advantage in finishing higher.

I like that idea.

Yes the Super League in rugby and the IPL in cricket have a fairer play off system where the highest placed teams have a better chance of making the final

But then more teams would go down than up, or would you give the premier place to the two winners of the 16th 17th and 4th 5th play off.

Keep The Play-Offs but The Changes that i'd would make to them  is for there to be Five teams instead of four

  • 3rd Placed team straight into the Wembley Final
  • 4th 5th 6th 7th placed teams battling it out for the other Final Spot.
