Would any centre back radically change the dynamic of how we play though?

No, and that's why I suggested we needed more. Not much more, but the type of players who could give us a more attacking approach Personally' there's no indication that Carlos's new attacking policy, is anything more than words. Using our attacking players in a negative way, seems to be integral to the teams effectiveness, if not it's entertainment value

Did any of you who were able to go to the Rangers friendly, see any signs of Carlos's new attacking approach? You would have thought we would have been perfecting this new way of playing during these warm up games, so what do people make of the new approach?

They always do give it to Bannan. It's easy, he's usually stood 5 yards away. Then he twists, turns and either gives it them back or tries a 50 yard diagonal.

He should be the one 15/20 yards further forward, making an angle, then collecting it on the half turn ready to drive forward or move it on quickly.

Never does it anymore. He'd rather come short for the easy ball. Then you get some of our fans saying silly things like "he ran the game" or "everything went through Bannan".

Absolutely sums it up.  If anyone can show me an example of Jones or Bannan getting beyond the strikers I'd be amazed.  Quite simply if you play 4-4-2 you must have players capable of fulfilling multiple roles.  So for example Kieran Lee going from defence to attack, Hooper linking play, full backs who get up and down the pitch, a centre half who can step out with the ball, wingers who can come in at the back post.  4-4-2 relies on this otherwise the 4 offensive players, 2 strikers/2 wingers just end up man for man against 2 centre halves/2 full backs.  Somebody has to make that 5 against 5 or 6 against 6.  You have to commit those who don't want to be in that tight defensive situation, the opposition centre mids.  By doing that, you create space for your own midfield to create with extra time on the ball, you provide him with more targets and you create overloads.

Its a very simple concept and without Kieran Lee, nobody in our central midfield is prepared to gamble and make a break into the box. I've never seen two midfielders in Jones and Bannan who receive the ball so much facing their own goal.  I have no problem with any of them receiving the ball deep, but if the wide men are going to tuck in to create midfield targets, then the other CM has to be prepared to break the lines and support.  Without KL we are seriously lacking that and we have been for some time.  He is integral to playing 4-4-2 and if he is not fit then we need another similar player to maintain the system of play.

Most would like to see FF out left, so play him there and whilst KL is out injured, put Adam Reach in at CM to use his energy and ability to break forward.  We can't be any weaker in CM in a defensive capacity as we are with Jones and Bannan, so I don't think we would lose out much there, but I do think going forward you would see us nicking the ball and Reach looking to get beyond the play and break.  He's done it before, I always cite Brum at home last year and Brizzle away.

Better still, if we had got that tall rangey midfielder at lot have been asking for, we wouldn't have this perpetual problem with our inability to throw an extra man forward.

Why have we not gone in with a good bid for Jackson Irvine, a player who scored 10 goals last season, playing as a predominantly defensive centre mid.  Not only does he have the ability to get box to box, he would free up Hutchinson as a centre half and alleviate some of the pressure in finding a centre half.

Put Bannan wide left, that's his best position

Or drop him.

Bannan on the left is okay but in the games I've seen him play there he still wants to drop inside. If you've got someone like Wallace doing the same on the other wing then you've got to have some excellent full backs.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. We know the club were in for other centre backs last summer before Sasso signed.

This is getting weird now. Note to self: never mention Sasso on Owlstalk again!

:duntmatter:

lol

All we know is Sasso was on loan, his loan spell with us finished, and then we signed him on a permanent 1-year contract after he was released from him club.

We don't know whether Sasso was signing for us regardless of whether we got another centre back or not. Given we are after two this summer, yet only lost Sasso, it would make sense for us to have been after two last summer too. But we'll never know.

Sunderland aim to bring ex-trainee Martyn Waghorn back to the club.

The relegated Black Cats are trying to rebuild on a tight budget under new boss Simon Grayson.

They need more firepower after the loss of Jermain Defoe and are weighing up a bid for Rangers hitman Waghorn.

Waghorn, 27, scored 16 goals for the SPL club last season up north but only has 12 months left on his contract at Rangers.

He remains popular at the Stadium of Light after starting his career there before a £3million transfer to Leicester in 2010.

Centre-backs are in short supply for nearly EVERYONE - Burnley cannot replace Keane because the market is quiet and they have converted Charlie Taylor into an emergency central defender who could start in that position against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on August 12.

That doesn't explain why we haven't brought in someone who brings energy to the midfield, and pace in forward areas. Both commodities were, by all accounts, still sadly lacking yesterday
