Stadiums under construction thread

I am amazed any club that has ambitions to play in the premiership builds a ground of less than 20k.

Particularly when they are London based there are just so many lost revenue opportunities.

I'm fine with it.  Atmosphere instead of empty seats in the futile pursuit of London entertainment dollar.

Genuinely pleased for Everton, I dislike how they have become the best of the rest, they are a great club hopefully this stadium will help them turn the big 6 into  the big 7

Couldn't give less of a rat's arse about Everton.  Not sure how they deserve anything more than where they are at

I get your point about atmosphere in half filled grounds. But imo football grounds loss of  atmosphere is primarily down to all seater stadiums and also the modern football fan in general

If Brentford actually got to the premiership I can think of at least 5 games

Arsenal

Tottenham

Chelsea

West Ham

Manchester United

Where more than 10000 visiting fans is more than possible that's 25% of the league games I don't understand why anybody would not want to take commercial advantage of that.

Regarding your comment about Everton  I am pretty sure that Everton don't give rats arse about you either lol

The issue is that building and running a bigger stadium will cost more. Brentford are probably realistic enough to know that even they did get up to the Prem they probably wouldn't be there for the long term. Given that they're not going to be taking supporters away from their more-established London neighbours they're not going to be getting big crowds very often. You can't build a stadium based on the potential returns of 25% of games in a probably-limited number of seasons - you still have the costs of the other 75% of games to contend with. I know it's a more extreme scenario, but look at Darlington: they built a stadium that was too big for them and the cost of it put them into administration three times and got them kicked out of the league.

Fair point well made.

I don't actually understand how much another 10k seats costs to run. Does it cost much more at all. A bit more rates, a bit more electric.

It is totally possible that in years to come those 10k seats could bring in more than £1m per match

I would expect it would cost more in power, water, etc, more in repairs/renovations, insurance, and presumably they would have to pay more in tax (not mention how much more it would cost to build it in the first place). And on the 25% of matchdays when they could potentially fill those extra 10,000 seats they would have to pay more in staffing, security, policing, etc.

And then if they get relegated out of the Prem - which you would expect would be more likely to happen than not - they get smaller crowds, less matchday income, less TV income, etc, and then still have to pay most of the same outlay that comes with having a big stadium.

I may be completely wrong in all this...but if I am then why are Brentford only building a 17,250 capacity stadium..?

QPR are looking to move to a 45,000 seater stadium with a redevelopment of an athletics stadium Sky Sports have announced.

45,000 seems very optimistic when they can barely fill the shed they currently have.

I think Loftus Road is a great little ground, close to the pitch, compact little stands.

intimidating for away teams

They should try to put another tier on all the stands.

It has character and it is instantly recognisable as Loftus Road.

The City ground redevelopment interests me as it could show the way forward with Hillsborough.

I'm not opposed to new grounds as long as they are architecturally interesting and individual. Germany seem to do that. I just don't like the concrete bowls we have up and down the country.

I love this thread keep popping back to it to see what is happening.

Bit too close to the pitch - when we were in the upper tier a few rows back you couldn't see the goal at our end.

I like Loftus Road too, but I get the impression that the compact nature and its position amongst housing would make it very difficult to develop any further. Personally I don't want QPR to relocate to the site of the Linford Christie Stadium because Wormwood Scrubs is an extremely important site for migratory birds (and other wildlife). It's been tough enough to get the HS2/Crossrail development to consider the impact on the local environment and adapt accordingly, and I can't see how a sizable new stadium can be built without catastrophic effects on the local ecology.

Guest The Horse

Nice little write up here on Spurs' first day.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47687411

The thing looks like an airport inside.

So many bars and food outlets and they look brilliant.

They have their own micro brewery in their stadium for god's sake!

Pretty incredible really.

Prices not as bad as I thought they'd be:
