mirodo
The 2030 World Cup will be held across six counties in three continents, Fifa has confirmed. Spain, Portugal and Morocco have been named as the co-hosts, with the opening three matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. The opening matches in South America are to mark the World Cup's centenary as it will be 100 years since the inaugural tournament in Montevideo. The decision is set to be ratified at a Fifa congress next year. "In a divided world, Fifa and football are uniting," said Fifa president Gianni Infantino. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67010609

alanharper
Well that'll be great for the 6 teams who have to play their opening game in South America, then travel back to Europe to prepare for their next game a few days later.
alanharper
Also, bids for 2034 will only be considered from Asia/Oceania - which probably means it's highly likely to be in Saudi Arabia - and another winter tournament to eff up everybody's schedules. Pablo Bonvin
That will do wonders for the climate change and sustainability agenda, dragging teams and fans half way round the world. No doubt we’ll be told that it’s the most environmentally friendly World Cup ever. Just like the one in Qatar, which was proven to be a little wide of the mark iirc. OneEightSixSeven
Infantino is another typical FIFA cracker. Don’t know if we’ll ever get someone in charge who actually understands and cares about the footballers, fans and the game going forward. I know the game needs cash but that’s all it’s ever been about with this mob. We all remember Blatter and some will remember Havelange who was proper bent, he taught Blatter all he knew. Should be 2038, but why shouldn't the middle east and Oceania have a world cup every 16-20 years

edmontonowl
Absolutely bizarre decision. Tournaments are supposed to be held in one locale, that's why they're tournaments, everyone coming together in one place and playing under the same conditions. It's a special occasion, and big event with a focus. Scrabbling it around the world makes it some sort of league set-up. They'll be spreading it over 52 weeks next. It's not about the football anymore.

Definitely have the infrastructure, and on the back of a terrific Women's World Cup. Australia bid for 2022 but ultimately lost. I reckon another bid would get over the line
