Championship club Wigan enter administration - automatic 12 point deduction

Recommended Posts

So, Wigans new owners love a punt....they are rumoured to have lumped on them to go down, Wigan are playing like Barcelona and look to finish mid table.... So they go into administration to get a 12 point deduction....

Allegedly.

Crikey.

Seems like Wigan fans have done more investigation into there owners in the last 18 hours than the EFL did during their fit and proper persons test. Some worrying stories coming out now about what could have happened. Getting picked up by BBC etc too that there's going to be an investigation into why they've gone into Admin.

If it turns out that they were placed in Admin for nefarious reasons I wonder if the 12 point penalty will be applied? One way of looking at it says it has to, other side of the coin it looks really bad to do so. Personally I'm just glad the league is well run so I have every faith it'll be sorted properly.

A chairman of a football club once told me that a single £50 bet, or more, on any football market in the UK gets red flagged, and looked at in some degree. That was a few years ago, so guess that limit has gone up a bit.

EFL looking foolish and incompetent, not for the first time.

Feel for Wigan fans, the due diligence carried out on Wigan's most recent takeover clearly inadequate. Owners come and go, the fans who stay are reliant on EFL to protect their club to some degree.

It's so much bigger than the EFL this though

The EFL are having to fight things way way way more powerful than they are with regards to betting syndicates, dodgy businessmen etc

It's not easy that

The focus really does need to come away from the EFL on this one and onto the shady business going on around football

How can such connections be fully scrutinized though? Practically every person that enters into football investment will have dodgy connections somewhere. Some of the Chansiri family business interests include links with dodgy private supply chains involving nasty human rights violations. Look at the things that came out in the ownership battle down at S2. Things that could not possibly have been known without the court battle. It would be impossible to find out everything in a standard due diligence process especially those that involve foreign investment syndicates.

Been verified now, by all accounts, no doubt our hearing will be put back another two weeks🙂

So is it 100% certain that it's Rick parry in the video?

If it is surely there questions to be asked about his ability to stay in role after a breach of confidentiality like this?

Someone filmed him without him knowing (pointing their phone at the floor even)

Yeah, been confirmed by various sources, no doubt he’ll get a slap on the wrist.

Fair point, accepted. But, still reasonable to expect a better level of scrutiny, or at least identify and implement a more robust system for approving potential new owners as a result of this.

EFL have overseen ownership issues at Charlton and Wigan this season, further down the leagues at Bury. An isolated occurrence could be forgiven, but serial oversights need to be investigated and processes tightened up.
