Championship club Wigan enter administration - automatic 12 point deduction

EFL Fit and Proper tests can't see in to the future; they are assessing the individuals on their past record, and more specifically, whether those individuals have unspent convictions, whether those individuals have been disqualified as directors, or whether those individuals have financial issues.   Nor do the EFL assess whether the individuals have bought a business and then sold assets from their new business.  That behaviour happens all over the corporate world.  Do the EFL step in and say that assets (such as the stadium) can't be moved from the Club or sold to third-parties?   If so, that's us done for.

It seems that Wigan were operating at a loss and required input from the owner, which didn't materialise.  People have mentioned Barnsley FC and the wealthy owners there.  The man owns three clubs.   Clubs are just play things for wealthy owners, and when you have unlimited money, the excitement of a weekend in Wigan soon disappates.

As for the punishment of 12 points deducted, it's deserved.  The reason is to stop clubs using Administration as an excuse to end their debt and maintain their position.  EFL must maintain this rule for that reason, even though it seems to be kicking clubs when they are down.  Think Leicester City and how fans up and down the country felt as they were perceived to get a new stadium with no debt.  They deny this, but the perception is there.

I feel for the fans as it's always those that suffer and who bail them out whatever the division.

So there’s no requirement to show proof of funds ?  No responsibility by the EFL to at least attempt to stop tyre kickers getting there grimy hands on proud old established clubs such as Wigan and Bury

https://www.efl.com/-more/governance/efl-rules--regulations/appendix-3---owners-and-directors-test/

It's all there, can't say I've read it in entirety but I've read the main jist.

If you buy a house for £100k, the £100k is part of the transaction and you will have to prove that (mortgage offer) to move forward.  Money and company will move in opposite directions at the same time I suppose.  I don't think you have to prove that you have the funds for new carpets and wallpaper though.

It's at the sellers discretion though as to whether to sell or not, regardless of the rules.

Honestly, Wigan got taken over a month ago, when the pandemics been going on for 3 months, and these owners passed the EFLs fit and proper persons tests.................Yet another failure of the EFL.

Bang on the mark - EFL, corrupt to the core

Wigan have been playing well too. Such a shame.

Might mean we can persuade Windass to sign on a free though.

Very sad for them. Football is a mess. Government help necessary to keep a town or city's club going given Cov 19 coup de grace. If such clubs go out of business , immediately more levelling down not up!

These "fit and proper" people.......

Why don't the EFL simply make them hand over an amount of money "Guaranteed" to go to the club, as a deposit, if they fail in the running of the club, this money is forfeit...The money should be the amount the club is worth

These chancers seem to have nothing to lose if they are asset stripping..If they either made nowt or lost nowt, they wouldn't bother...If they stood to lose a deposit that was worth less than the "assetts" they were going to strip...they wouldn't come within a hundred miles of football

Should the government step in to support an industry where players are earning millions of £s per year?

Football is a long way down in the list of industries that should receive government support.

These clubs will come back. They may be in a different guise and run on a much lower budget but they’ll come back

Simin Jordan has been banging the drum on exactly this for a while. He says, using the Championship as an example, you have to put up a bounty of £10million should the worst happened.

It would definitely scare off the likes of Steve Dale (Bury) & Ken Anderson (Bolton) from trying to assert strip clubs.

Lets rewind a few seasons ago to the year that Palace were deducted points and we played them in a relegation decider.

That season, they broke the rules, yet still kept the players whos wages they couldnt afford. The same players who they couldnt afford in the first place which ultimately sent us down. They got away with it. The points deduction ultimatley ended up as a token gesture and they went to progress as a club and we were consigned to the third tier.

Think how agrieved we felt that season and how cheated we felt. The same applies with Wigan in my opinion. If they do manage to stay up by more than 12 points then theyve gotten away with it. They should start on -12 next season should they stay up with more than 12 points

Wigan going into administration completely validates the EFL’s P&S rules.

If anything, today’s news shows that the EFL have been right all along to continuously bang the drum about clubs spending within their means.

Tell me why then the EFL seemingly hung Bury out to dry but seemingly bent over backwards to help Bolton stay in business? They seem to be very inconsistent in how they govern their clubs IMO?

Agree...but immediate help to stop a Bury happening and conditional help to follow. Salaries paid and also price of admission clearly ridiculous.

Should they stay up by 13 points then fair play to them.

If we stay up after a points deduction this season would we have gotten away with it.

The simple facts are some clubs just dont have enough fans to get by..bolton wigan bury etc..people moaning about bury goin out of business have got to realise only about 2,500 people in tjeir town wanted to watch them every week

Wasnt the Bolton board more willing to play ball then the Bury one. I think the Bury chairman knew exactly what he was doing.

I believe the 12 points deduction won't happen, they will argue that current climate has impacted their cash flow.

Bury overspent based on their turnover and attendances. Who do you think should have provided the bail out for them? Taxpayers?
