'Fancy Dan' footballers quote

He was a cheat.  He cheated football at Wednesday. He was one of the worlds best defenders in 1991, the version we got in 1993 was a shadow of that player and he only has himself to blame.  From 1997 onwards he was a joke.

Seriously? He was a one man team in a lot of games I saw and is often picked in 'all time Wednesday 11's' on here. I've never ever heard any other Wednesday fan criticise him to that level and call him a cheat.

So if contribution to the team doesn’t make them better players then I’m totally lost.  It’s a team game, not a footballing version of X Factor.

As I said earlier, not many people would accuse  Trapattoni or Capello of being poor managers and they both showed Di Canio the door.  He was a talented player for sure, far more talented than some on my list, but also a deeply flawed individual who played predominantly for himself.  I was happy to see him leave af the time and have few really fond memories of him playing for the Owls.

Trapattoni and Capello probably had a few other good player’s in their squads to be fair.

Its like saying Sancho is rubbish because Guardiola got rid

I dont think anyone is saying Di Canio was rubbish player. Was a brilliant player just that some of the worlds top managers at the worlds leading clubs found his temperament too much to handle and at times he wasn't a team player.

No surprise he didn't hang around at Wednesday for long.

Read my post on man management which Wilson sadly had none

So his man management was brilliant at Barnsley and good for nine out of our starting 11 and that is Wilson's fault?

I loved the two italians, especially when they were on form, but if you can remember or rewatch some of the games again, both players used to spit their dummies out and their performances suffered for it. That is down to their personalitiies and temperaments and once they cross the line there is very little any manager can do about things like that other than try to remind them of what they should be doing, hope they will cool down, or take them off.

At the time foreign players were still deemed as a luxury

They were also labelled as insular, greedy and self serving

Just as they do now in my opinion. The only reason so many foreign players came to England and still cone to England is the wages. This whole thread started out as a love in for Di Canio and yes he was a gifted player that could get you on your feet, but he came with a lot of baggage, had some very strange ideas and had internal battles between being talented v being a nutter. The saying art for art's sake can be applied to footballers. Its no good doing silly tricks or trying to take on the world single handed if the team doesn't gain anything from it. Some might call it fancy dan football some call it arty farty or whatever, but it's the same thing.

I think Di Canio was  brilliant footballer with a very high opinion of hinself and a bad temperament tgat was prone to playing a lot of ineffective arty farty football at times. At other times he could look like a football god, but not even he knew which Di Canio would turn up and it could change in a flash.

Think you will be in the minority with that view. His move to Italy didn't work out and as a result he never hit the heights he had set before that but from 93-97 he was very good for us. Being partnered with the likes of Andy Pearce and having Ian Nolan in the back 4 didn't help our goals against record at the time but it was obvious that Des was class at that time. By 98 he had gone and the last couple of years were two too many for us.

Best defender I have ever seen at S6 - and if you read Carlton Palmer's book he concurs. He made things look easy as he read the game and when he did get caught he had the pace and the tackling ability to get out of most situations.

Ian Nolan was a right footed left back I will say no more

The other 9 didn't give a rats arse about what went on the 2 Italians clearly did. De-Bilde, Jonk, Sibon, the O's all here for a pay day and little else.

He was a player of huge ability who was bossing the best in the world two years before he signed for us. When we had him he was nothing like that player. He couldn’t pass, never came forward, and was beaten on a regular basis by average forwards.
He was rarely injured because he wasn’t putting it in during matches. He was playing and training at half pace and I suspect he wasn’t living the best of lifestyles off the pitch. He was a poor captain and dropped from that position . No other team wanted him hence why he stayed for so long. England dropped him and he never got back in , rightly.

i will always maintain he cheated football and worst himself. I bet he is full of regrets about his career.

Hang on a minute...

The foreign players (De Bilde, Sibon etc) sat in one half of the dressing room behind a partition wall at one point and the English players on the other - not socialising together at all

Hardly 9 out of 11 he could man manage that...

Wednesday told him to go an train in Italy and then sold him to West Ham (I think Harry Redknapp managed that temperament for about five years)

Di Canio and Carbone are easily the best players we have had for the last 25 years. And we would have been relegated a lot sooner without them.

As for the fancy dan tag. To me that just means a brilliant player people are jealous of because they dont posses there talent.

As for Booth. I think he was a lot better than people give him credit for. Just had to compete with two of our best ever players. Imagine how average Fletcher would look now if Di Canio and Carbone were about today.

So it's just a coincidence that he left Celtic, Juventus  Milan and Lazio all under a cloud as well.

Just a coincidence that it was always the club that was at fault?

Not saying Wednesday handled it well but Di Canio was never going to hang around long no matter what the club did.

How come?

Redknapp's greatest strength as a manager was his man management.

He got what a genius Paolo was and made sure he made it work for him and the club. And the results are for all to see. People believed he was a fantastic footballer at West Ham its were he became a star if you like and that's down to the way the Redknapp managed him.

I have no doubt Ferguson would have got a tune out of him for United aswell.

I don't think he was a cheat but likewise I don't think he was an amazing player for us. One of the best of a bad bunch and nowhere near an England recall at the time.

There is a difference between what happened at S6 and the other clubs though isn't there. Di Canio was left to rot and the club didn't offer any assistance to him and he wasn't even represented at the hearing. Look at what Ben Flower did in the Rugby League grand final when he chinned Lane Ohia.

Wigan let him take his medicine but put him on a reintegration programme etc, they didn't throw him under a bus, same as Ferguson didn't with Eric Cantona
