So apparently this american company have been poaching journos and have created a sports site with no adverts. You get a free month and then it's discounted from there. Personally i am fed up of pop ups or having to read left or right wing papers site to find news. So this may work. It's free for a month so just cancel if not for you. I'm going to give it a go anyway. This is a referral from my account if you want to try it. (I DO NOT WORK FOR THEM).

We have a dedicated Journo too, Dom has competition.

Just use an ad blocker on your browser of choice? It takes about 30 seconds to do.

This is like when that guy went on Dragons Den with a pitch for a bit of plastic that keeps the end of your cucumber fresh.  They've invented something that's not needed!

I know it's crazy, I use a recycled condom for my cucumber. Just give it a rinse after pumping your missus and boom, slide it onto your cucumber.

What's it like? What stories are they running on us at the moment?

Is it just journal pieces or any other content?

They have a decent little chat with Borner and then some pieces on there too. Plus if in to American sports they have a lot of other coverage too. The borner piece alone is interesting.

Subscribed to it for a few years, as I like American Sports. If it follows that format then its less clickbait articles than you'd see on the star and more long form articles. So over the course of a week, you'd get less articles than the Star but the quality and depth would be better(depending on the person writing it of course).

Good piece on there this morning from Michael Cox, about the tactics of the three teams who won promotion to the Premier League. Last Wednesday article was a piece on whether its time to give Bullen the job.

It's absolutely needed.  Newspapers have been gutting their staffs.  The Star produces two paragraph tedium.  The traditional model is dying.  Twitter is a cesspool.  Facebook is worse.  The Guardian couldn't even do a comprehensive Championship preview!

The Athletic is built around quality rather than quantity.

They have done very, very well in the North American Sports world over the last few years - the have done very well in poaching the best Sports Writers and giving them space to write what they want. Basically, rather than having Churn out very thin articles every day to basically give a Match Report plus whatever rumour they can find online, The Athletic give them room to actually plan, think, and write better articles about the subject they cover.

Certainly in Baseball Circles they are absolutely killing it.

True, although I've noticed more and more websites are forcing you to disable it these days, I wonder if eventually it'll become the norm and ad blockers won't be effective?

It’s pretty good. It is all original content there are about 8 articles about Wednesday (since 5th August), which in my opinion are well above the recent standard of The Star. Topics range from is Bullen the right man, to should Leppings Lane be knocked down and rebuilt (the focus being on modernisation on the recent issue with SAG).

I’ve also read a very interesting long read article about what happens during the transfer window and one about Spurs consulting with fans about offensive chanting. Articles are quite in depth and speak to a range of stakeholders.

The headlines reflect the content, so there’s no click bait and there are no pop ups. However, if you are looking for football gossip it’s not what they do.

On balance I’m impressed. I’ve got a month trial subscription and if the standard is maintained I’d expect to keep it going for a while once that expires.

Hope that’s useful for anyone considering a subscription.
