He would be found out in 3 weeks The problem is that today ex-players don't want to serve their apprenticeships. They want to walk straight into a job in the top two divisions. Look at Lampard. I guess they're so rich these days that if they make a hash of it they don't care. In the past players needed to work after they retired, so they couldn't afford that luxury. The guy has been part of our coaching staff for several years. Completely different to Lampard who walked into a high profile job without any previous coaching experience. But management is a different matter, a different job description. You start at a club like Boston United and work your way up, like Smith, Wilko and Evo did. Lampard won countless trophies, played under some of the worlds best managers and was an absolute monster of a football and a leader in the dressing room. Think the way he went straight into management at a decent club was very brave considering many ex pros turn to punditry instead. They might played on being underdogs a bit but they went up because they were incredibly well drilled, fit and used there players correctly playing to their strengths. Same as Norwich, same as Leeds, same as Cardiff the year before. You’d do well to create a siege mentality in this league, no one else is going to care one iota what you’re up to unless you seriously stir the pot somehow. Essentially we need the best manager we can get. Bobby Charlton, for instance, tried his hand at management and it didn't work out for him. Will Ronaldo, as manager, ever lead Real Madrid to European Cup glory in the future? Maybe, but it's by no means a given. I don't see him serving his apprenticeship either. He'll be given a top job and it'll either work or it won't. It's common knowledge Mandaric wanted Warnock but had to bow to fan pressure and abandon that move. While all this happened Gray quietly went about making a serious claim for the job and the rest is history. You could argue that Gray left the foundations for Carvalhal's two play-off finishes?
