Treatment of Penney

There were no wingers out there tonight.

bannan reach and Penney were all across the middle of the pitch just like against United the other week.

either he can’t play left wing because he’s constantly too Central - or he’s being told to tuck in.

either way if you watched that game and thought he was playing left wing you’re wrong I’m afraid.

Left Midfield

We started  451 finished 433

Behave , Baker had a decent game

Hes not as good as Palmer though and won’t ever be.

too slow to be a championship full back. Can’t get up and down enough.

like the kid and I’m sure he’ll have a career in the game but it won’t be at right back for Wednesday

Thought him and Thorniley were our 2 most consistent performers tonight

I’ll have more patience with youngsters than senior pros.

However if he’s in the first team, his performances have to be judged as a first team player. Recently he’s not looked up to it. Understandable, but needs to improve.

Can’t argue that he’s been thrown in at the deep end though.

The position he played in under 18s has no bearing on what he should play in the championship.

He's not ready to be a winger at this level but he had been impressive as a left back.

People are suggesting the position is alien to him.

I am merely correcting that assertion.

Tbf, he didn't exactly offer much, did he?

He's very passive in his play and seems unwilling/incapable of getting properly involved.

After a promising start, I've been far from impressed.

He started off fairly well and probably assumed it would carry on like that

Think he’s had a big reality check last couple months

There might be a player in there but he’s a good season or 2 away from championship level, needs to develop

He wasn’t contributing much so got subbed off. Rightly so.

One of the few times Jos has done something right lately.

Pretty much.

Plenty of things to criticise Jos for, but hauling the hapless Penny for Nando certainly isn't one of them.

He had poor game and Luhukay was right to take him off.

But he is hardly doing him any favours. In 10 or so games he started, he was played all over the place, at lb, lwb, lw, cm and am. Would have messed up far more experienced players.

Should be played at left back, as he is the best one we have.

Hes quicker, passes the ball better, gets forward more and is far more experienced.

Penney was finding himself in the centre. Just like he was against United.

Its not his position and we’re in danger of ruining a genuinely talented lad. In and out the team, changing his position every other week, taking him off at half time. It’s poor management.

Don’t start him if he’s not ready. Or just play him left back where he was beginning to find his feet before the constant chopping and changing to the defence.

We ruin young players at Wednesday, and the comments in this thread back that up.

First 2 or 3 times I saw Penney I was quietly impressed but the last half dozen appearances I’ve watched he’s been awful. No point dressing it up.

Whether it’s cos he’s been moved around, he’s still learning, he’s got his new contract or simply isn’t good enough it’s too early to say. The constant changing of position can’t be helping though. That energy and confidence on the ball he showed initially seems to have disappeared very quickly. Worrying when we’re so short on alternatives.
