Popular Post Lord Snooty
A fortnight ago when Jo Luhukay said young George Hirst was training with the first team again and would be playing for the U23's and would "be available to play" ... I opined to my man Stubbs that with the injury crisis I thought the Hirst boy would make the team for the Bolton game. Yes, he'd been out for months, but he looks like he's been hammering the weights and he scored on his comeback. There's no niggling injuries hanging over him. He's a young fit lad, not an over the hill ruin with a bad back like myself and half the first team. Yes. "He'll make the bench at least. It's a perfect scenario." I told my man. Imagine my horror to see the most recent press conference from Jos, just 14 days later saying he wasn't available for selection and that it was out of his hands. "Well, he won't sign his contract will he ,Sir." said my man, Stubbs "True." I replied. "But then again neither will Clare and yet he's being selected..." "Pride, Sir. Pride" "Indeed. And poor old Jos trying to scrabble us through games with the slimmest pickings of any manager in the division. Bless him, one minute with a cheeky grin and a twinkle in his eye the next looking forlorn and dejected." So as the season continues to tail out with us in something of a spin thats another ***** of light fizzled out And as if to make the darkness even more complete...we now face Bolton Wanderers... Wednesday - V - Bolton ... a side who have already beaten us twice this season. A side who we just can't seem to beat. In fact they have beaten us in four of the last 5 league games at Hillsborough too so it's not just some away day hoodoo. We just have to cling to the hope we can do what we did in 2016 when we beat them 3-2 with goals from Fernando and Hooper. Speaking of Hooper. Still our top scorer despite not having played since being substituted on Boxing day. Grim indeed. Match facts The Trotters have already beaten the Owls twice this season, winning in the EFL Cup second round in August and in the Championship in October. Well at least we didn't have to face them in the FA Cup I suppose. I mean that really would have been the icing on the cakeball wouldn't it. Lucas Joao has been responsible for six of Sheffield Wednesday's last nine Championship goals. And he must start. If he doesn't I think I'd be well within my right to aim a carefully arced Hardgum towards the dug out. (Don't worry SAG, American hard gums aren't actually that hard. Bolton have scored two goals in their last seven away Championship matches (W1 D2 L4). We have to cling to this. This is a great chance for us to get a vital clean sheet. It could make all the difference at the end of the season. Looks like they're really missing £6m striker Gray Madine. Six million pounds. Gary Madine. I still can't really believe it. And we let him go for what? Nothing? Superb. Bolton boss Phil Parkinson has won seven of his 10 managerial meetings with Sheffield Wednesday in all competitions (D2 L1). Every week isn't it? Every sodding week the match facts come out and it turns out the opposition manager has some sort of bloody hoodoo over us. Big Mick last week. The cider swiller this week. I mean when is it all going to end? The table is tight. A Bolton win would actually see them leapfrog us. If results go their way. There's no other way of saying it. We need to win this game or we're down the creak without a paddle. I keep hearing that we have a chance because their are so many much poorer sides than we are. Which I'd agree with if we didn't have the biggest casualty bay in European football. I mean, on the face of it win lose or draw there will be an attitude of "We've got to be beating sides like Bolton" . Which we have. But because we're in the mire. Not because they are poor and we're great. I mean...when you look at their team and compare it to the team we're putting out...is it really that much weaker? Really? Henry isn't everyones cup of tea but he's an experienced campaigner in the middle of the park. He'll be putting himself about and making it a battle. Have we got lads that will be doing the same? He'll be partnered by the German Jan Kirchhoff a 6"5 monster of a player. The skipper Pratley is another who likes to get in, and leave in boot. Even the full backs Flanagan (on loan from Liverpool) and Taylor on the other side are two 6 footers. They're a big powerful team. So whilst I want us to beat them, and think we can. Lets please drop the "We should be beating them" because that just doesn't wash. It's eleven against eleven out there. It's a bloody war. There's no "should" that ever won anything. We can't be complacent...and I think that recent results are starting to hammer that message home. We might think we should beat them but they're the team in better form too despite being below us in the table. Ok. It's not much better form. But mentally a win a loss and two draws will I'm sure have them in a better place than our lads are after the ignominy of 4 defeats on the spin. Up front they have ALF and considering some of our fanbases' obsession with him over the years you can almost see the headlines already. This is a much bigger task than some think I hope to God that we back the boys tomorrow the best we can because they're going to need it. The players need to be strong and we need to be strong. We've got to help them through this shitestorm. They need a win and they need one badly. They need one for themselves as much as for the league table. Losing is a habit that can affect the head. The boys have got to go out there against these monsters and Hulks and compete. That's the only chance we have. We want to see nice football of course, but that has to be on the backburner now. It's about winning tackles, winning headers and busting a gut. It's about earning the right to play. It's about getting our heads in the right place. As one of our former skippers put it just last evening .... Who will Jos pick? Who knows. What will work? Who knows. Half the season (when we had our better players about) we felt they were being shoehorned into a 4-4-2. Jos has come in with half the squad injured and mixed things up with a 3-5-2. Which nicked us some excellent points at first. But we're now in the position of needing wins. Some people now want us to return to the old system. It's like tactical Stockholm Syndrome. "Bring back Carlos and his dull turgid 4-4-2. At least in those days we lost games getting hammered down the centre of the pitch rather than now. Getting hammered from wide" etc etc. We're truly an odd bunch. Will he go back to his 3-5-2 again? Who knows. He's yet to really find the right formula. There's always a square peg somewhere whatever he attempts. Maybe something like this? I like a side with balance. And that's got it. Win the midfield. Have left footers on the left and right footers on the right. Oh I know. I'm old fashioned like that. It's a simple game. Do the simple things well. Footballers...they like things keeping simple for them. It allows them to do their jobs better in my experience. Mind you, I always think banning coloured boots would help in the quest to stay up too. I'm a bit like that. It's what following this team does to you. It's why Owlsman has such a roughage filled diet. It's why people wear the same socks week after pongy week. We have to do everything we can to get over the line to safety. There's one fella who could help this enormously by getting us some striped shirts and.... .....it seems the memo has reached him and we'll be getting them next season! . Still .There's games to go before then. We can't be thinking about next season just yet. We have battles to be won left on this campaign. So it's up to me and my lucky hard gums. Owlsman and his lucky poos. And it's up to everyone else out there too to do their lucky things. So pull your hood up at half time if it's got us a point in the past. Have two wee wees instead of one at half time if it once saw us awarded a penalty that never was. If you forgot to sugar your tea one morning and we won then it's time to go sugarless again. Come on! Think people. Think. I'm off for a hand-shandy over Marilyn from Home and Away. Last time I did that we beat Bolton 4-2 and Kovacevic and Hirst got two apiece. NNNNNNggggghghghghggghhhhh hAArrrrgggghhhh!!! Cum COME ON WEDNESDAY 7 5

nevthelodgemoorowl
Eddie Hopkinson was their keeper and about Englands number 5 choice behind Springett, Macedo, Hodgkinson and Banks. He always had a blinder when he came here and they always seemed to fluke something on the back of Hopkinsons performances. Hope I'm wrong but have a feeling Hutch will not be risked. So I'm going for the odd goal in seven will settle it, as both sides have to go for it and two poor defences 4-3 either way.

Gresh
I think we'll get our mojo back this game and have a comfortable 3 v 0 win, with Joao bagging a brace in between Dave scoring. Hopefully I'm not too delusional.
