They're going to be the first two names on the team sheet so makes sense to give them the first two numbers, means the keeper will always be read out first on the team sheet as well. There are plenty of traditions we still adhere to Wednesday play in blue and white (well, we used to) that's tradition - playing in pink and green hoops wouldn't have an effect on how we play but it's our tradition. Was gunna say I remember that Gyan wore 3 when he was at Sunderland and he was a striker.
